LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 24 Florida Southern College women's tennis team secured its first win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Bates College Monday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The Mocs (1-2, 0-2 SSC) won every court in doubles and in singles in a great win over their DIII opponent. Bates (0-1, 0-0 NESCAC) lost its season opener with only one set win on the day.
FSC started with great energy in doubles competition in which
Vivien Charvatova and
Neli Sunjic shut out their opponent with a 6-0 win on the #2 court. On court #3,
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over a team of Saul and Williams. In initial back-and-forth games,
Maxima Ellenberg and
Laura Vetter handled their opponent in a 6-4 score.
The success carried over into singles as each of the six courts went to the Mocs.
Laia Pasini won each of her two sets to a score of 6-1, 6-4, as did
Olivia Bryant 6-2, 6-1. The match point went to
Isabella Bolivar that won on court #6 with a score of 6-3, 6-2, and 4-0 Moccasin score.
Charvatova handled court #5 with a 6-1, 6-4 score as did Ellenberg on court #2. Ellenberg battled in the first set to a 7-6 score and tiebreak, which Ellenberg won 7-1, and eventually the second set 6-3. After a win in set one, Vetter lost a close set two but outlasted Littlefield to a 10-7 tiebreak score on court #3.
Mocs will have a quick turnaround as they face No. 23 Rollins College in a top-25 matchup with conference wins on the line. FSC will take on the Tars Wednesday, Feb. 22, set for a 3 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
