LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's tennis team prevailed 4-3 to secure a big conference win against the Rollins College Tars in a top-25 conference matchup at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Â
"Complete team effort, starting with great doubles by all three teams to earn the point," said head coach
Trish Riddell after the win. "Then we had huge wins for three of our singles players, most notably at number one with Laia coming back after losing the first set. Very proud of this team."
Â
Florida Southern, still hot from their win against Bates College, used their momentum to defeat the Tars, starting with three consecutive wins on the doubles courts. Most notably, FSC's
Vivien Charvatova and
Neli Sunjic held the Tars 6-0 on court #2, making productive use of serve points to best their opponents on the other side of the net. Maxima Ellenburg and
Laura Vetter won on doubles court #1, finishing 6-3. Likewise,
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren held their Rollins opposition 6-3 on court #3 to complete a rewarding doubles sweep for the Mocs.
Â
For the singles,
Olivia Bryant held her opponent 6-1 in both rounds of singles play on court #4, securing the first singles point for the Mocs.
Â
As soon as it seemed the Tars were gaining momentum with three singles court wins,Â
Laia Pasini seized a crucial win on court #1 against Georgina Groth, a senior from Hamburg, Germany who posted a 10-6 singles record from the top spot during the 2021-2022 season. Pasini, a junior transfer from Stetson University, has had a successful season thus far, securing a singles win against Bates College's Ally Friedman just two days ago.
Â
Charvatova earned the tie-breaking win over Maria McKay on court #5, closing the match with a second win for the Mocs this season.
Â
The Florida Southern Women's Tennis Team will return this Friday, February 24th, at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fl. The first match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Tritons' Fred Bullard Courts.
