Mocs Minutes: Several Teams in Action at Home This Weekend

  • No. 24 Florida Southern will travel to St. Pete with a two-game win streak in the latest week at home. FSC beat Bates College 7-0 on Monday, only dropping one set the entire match. Mocs were led by a great doubles bout with Maxima Ellenberg and Laura Vetter a big win at #1 ahead of a sweep for the doubles point. In singles, Mocs had a tiebreak first set at #2, which Ellenberg outlasted her Bates competition. Laia Pasini continued a great run with a win at #1 as did Olivia Bryant, Vetter, Vivien Charvatova, and Isabella Bolivar. Against No. 23 Rollins, Mocs had a thrilling match in which FSC won 4-3 with the last two finishing courts the decider. Mocs again swept the doubles field, but the Tars rebounded with wins on three singles courts. Bryant handled her competition easily with another two-set win and the match came down to a crucial third set for Pasini at #1. Pasini lost the first set but recovered to win her flight and tie the Tars with only one court left. Charvatova was on #5 and sealed the match win for the Mocs with a two-set win over top 25 Rollins.
  • Eckerd will host Florida Southern in its third match of the season after a season opener loss to No. 16 Tampa 7-0 and a win against Warner University on Monday 6-1. Against Warner, the Tritons swept the doubles competition easily, with only one singles court loss that went to three sets. A battle for Raia Jagger at #3 went to a tiebreak in the first set, but she won her set and eventually the second for a flight win. The #6 court had a similar situation with a tiebreak first set, but again the Tritons were victorious in their first win of the season ahead of the Mocs.
  • HISTORY: Mocs have faced the Tritons since 1971 with FSC a 62-10 advantage overall. With a 28-3 record on the road, Mocs have a great time on the Florida west coast. The last 10 matches have one to the Mocs, including a 7-0 win in Lakeland last season. FSC has only given up two points in the last 10 years.

  • Florida Southern will take on Eckerd in its first conference series of the 2023 season on the road against Eckerd. The Mocs have won the last four games and are 5-1 in the last two weekend series after a slow start to the season. FSC outscored GCSU 28-9 in last weekend's series on the road and had a great weekend of batting by the team. Mitch Donofrio had a grand slam in game two against the Bobcats after a 6-5 extra-innings win for the Mocs. Connor Berry had a great weekend, batting .533 with four RBI. El'Rico Riley had a home run of his own with the team batting .331 on the weekend.
  • Mocs have found the bat the last two weeks to boost the team's average to .278 on the year. Berry leads the team with a .359 average over nine games, with Bryce Safferwich continuing to impress with a .353 average and 12 hits. Donofrio leads the team and conference with four homers on the season with a team total 13 beyond the fence (tied with Lynn for most by a team in the conference), compared to six by their opponents.
  • On the mound, Florida Southern continues to be led by starters Nathan Madej and Aric McAtee. Both have a combined 38 strikeouts in a combined 32.1 innings pitched. As a team, Mocs have a 4.15 ERA with Madej and McAtee each with a win on the season. FSC has used Jake Curry and Jordan Fox to start game three the last few weeks, each working to find their pitch. Justin Stewart leads the team with two wins on the year as a great reliever for the Mocs.
  • Eckerd had its series against Georgia College canceled two weeks ago but had a bout against Delta State last weekend. The Tritons won the series 2-1 after a 2-1 extra-innings win and a 5-4 doubleheader win in seven scheduled innings. Eckerd won game one taking advantage of a throwing error to put a man on second before Ericson hit a walk-off RBI single to win the game. The Tritons racked up 11 hits in their 5-4 win against Delta State before a 6-2 loss to the Statesmen for game three.
  • Tritons have a .312 batting average with two batting .400. Tyler Cox leads the team with .406 and Ericson at .400. Eckerd has five additional players batting over .300 in their seven games. With only one homer on the year, EC has 79 hits on the year in four fewer games than most of the conference. On the mound, the Tritons have a combined 3.22 ERA and Cox is playing double duty as DH and starter for two of their games. He has a 2.08 ERA and only allowed three earned runs in his two wins. Eckerd has a conference low 47 strikeouts relying on a good infield to keep the runs low.

  • No. 4 Florida Southern welcomes the Panthers to Berend Field to open the home portion of the 2023 schedule Friday night after picking up two wins on the road over top-25 teams. The Moccasins defeated then-no. 23 Mount Olive 21-12 on Feb. 17 before earning a win at then-no. 13 Wingate 14-12 on Feb. 19.
  • The Moccasins saw Jackie Stoller lead the team in points with 11 and tied with Giana Murphy and Abby McFerren for team lead in goals scored with six. Stoller picked up five assists in the two wins on the road.
  • Gina Verrone heads into the weekend as the team leader in draw controls with 20 and as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Verrone added five ground balls and five caused turnovers during the opening weekend.
  • As a team, the Mocs have 35 goals on the young season for an average of 17.5 per game. Florida Southern carries a .479 shooting percentage on the year with a .904 shots on goal percentage landing 66 shots on frame. The Mocs are 80% successful on the clear converting 28-of-35 between the pair of away games.
  • No. 2 Adelphi opened its season Tuesday with a 14-9 loss at No. 6 Tampa. Izzy Grant and Alison Turner paced the team with three points apiece where Grant scored two goals and had one assists while Turner completed the hattrick. In goal, Madison Marchetta finished with seven saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
  • History Adelphi holds the all-time series record 5-3 with a 4-2 record in Lakeland. Florida Southern won the last matchup 8-4 on Feb. 20, 2020 with eight goals in the first half compared to Adelphi's four second half goals. The Panthers started the all-time series with a pair of wins in 2015 and the first meeting in 2016 but the Moccasins' first win over AU was in the 2016 title game at the NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse National Championship game, 8-7, in Denver, Colo. This will be the first matchup between the two teams after the game switched to four quarters rather than two halves.

  • Florida Southern is returning home to open up the home portion of the Sunshine State Conference series with Eckerd College for a single game on Friday night and doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Mocs started the season off strong with a sweep against Ursuline, and hold a 2-0 record at Chris Bellotto Field. The Mocs have been on the road for the past two weekends falling 1-3 at Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic at #5 North Georgia and then opened up conference action at Barry this past weekend falling 1-2, splitting the doubleheader.
  • As a team FSC is sitting eighth in the conference, but is first in fielding with a .987. Taylor Thomas is in the top 15 hitting with a .417 batting average. Senior Kelsey Peck is in the top 10 leaders in the SSC for several categories. Peck is first in homers with four, eighth slugging (.733), and seventh in runs batted in (11).
  • Thomas is leading the Mocs from the plate with a .417 batting average going 10-for-24, two runs, five RBIs, and two doubles. Behind Thomas is senior Jessica Bryson, batting a .381, going 8-for-21 from the plate, with four runs, two RBIs, and a double. Peck who is having her best year is batting a .300 going 9-for-30 from the leadoff spot. The Lakeland native has four homers, 11 RBIs, seven runs, and a double in nine games. Mel Rogers is leading FSC from the circle with three wins and one loss and a 1.16 ERA appearing in five games. The right-handed pitcher has 19 strikeouts on the season, allowing seven runs, only three being earned. Junior transfer, Ashley Blessin is 1-2 on the season striking out 14 batters.
  • Eckerd is currently on a two game win streak defeating Western University in run rule fashion with a 13-3 and 11-0 shutout on Wednesday. Prior to the sweep the Tritons hosted Lynn University going 2-1 against the Fighting Knights to open up SSC action. Eckerd won game one 5-3 before battling in game one of the doubleheader with an 11 inning game that ended with a 3-2 decision in favor of the Tritons. Eckerd fell in the final game of the series with a 6-5 difference.
  • The Tritons are sitting third in the conference just behind Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern who are both undefeated in the SSC.
  • Eckerd is led by Ella Coiner who is batting a .581 playing and starting in all 10 games for the Tritons. Coiner has gone 18-for-31 from the plate with nine runs, 13 RBIs, and two doubles. Behind Coiner is Jenice Casanas batting a .423 going 11-for-26 from the plate with nine runs, one double, and three RBIs. Brenna Lokeinsky is the last Triton to bat in the 400s hitting a triple, along with Lauren Margolis who is the only Eckerd player to hit a homer this season. Avery Beauchaine is 1-2 on the year supporting a 2.01 ERA striking out 11 batters.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern and Barry are meeting for the 132nd time since 1985. The Mocs won in game one of the series and fell in the doubleheader with a 3-2 8 inning game before falling 9-0 in 5 innings.

  • Florida Southern opened up the 2023 season last weekend with a difficult start falling in the tri-match in straight sets. In the #1 and #2 ladder was split up in two different pairings as Emma Shaddix and Sarah Crocker fell against Palm Beach Atlantic in the #1 spot and Hayley St. Martin and Olivia D'Agostino fell against the Sailfish in the #2 slot. With that the Mocs divided the top two spots against Saint Leo as Crocker and St. Martin joined forces in the #1 space and but fell in a closer battle with a score of 21-17, 21-20.In the #2 ladder was Shaddix and D'Agostino who also did better as a pairing with a score of 21-8, 22-20.
  • Palm Beach State College Opened up their season on Feb. 5 and went on a 5-0 run until facing Palm Beach Atlantic going 5-0 against the Sailfish. Palm Beach State is currently on a three game losing streak falling to PBA 5-0, Webber 3-2, and Saint Leo 4-1.
  • HISTORY: This is the first meeting between the two teams.

  • No. 18 Florida Southern returns to action after a two-week break to take on nationally-ranked Limestone at home. The Moccasins are coming off a tough 19-15 setback against Anderson at home and will look to get back to their winning ways against the Saints. FSC is seeking its first victory over Limestone in program history while head coach Marty Ward is seeking his first career victory over his alma mater.
  • Senior Sean Nolan leads the FSC offensive attack with 11 goals through three games and a pair of assists for a team-best 13 points. Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck and graduate student Jay Minor share the team lead in assists with four each while freshman Nolan Tighe sits second on the squad in goals behind Nolan with seven. Freshman Jacob Czyz has taken all 80 face offs for the Mocs this season and has gone 35-of-80 (.438) at the 'X'. He also leads the team in ground balls with 22.
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team-best 12 turnovers this season while scooping up 11 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Senior midfield Lucas Sommers has caused six turnovers to rank second on the team while senior Zac Fitzgerald has five. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season led by graduate student Maxwell Freestone who has a 2-1 record this season with a 9.98 goals against average. Freestone has made 28 saves in 138-plus minutes of action.
  • No. 12 Limestone, similar to Florida Southern, is coming off its first loss of the season. The Saints fell at home this past Saturday to Sunshine State Conference foe and 12th-ranked Rollins, 13-11. The Saints have wins over Saint Leo and North Greenville on the road and defeated Embry-Riddle 16-10 at home to open the season. The Saints went 17-3 last season, falling to eventual National Champions Tampa in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Sophomore Zachary Terry leads the Saints with 20 goals through four games this season. He has also handed out two assists for a team-best 22 points. Junior Chris Erneston IV is second on the team with 12 goals, as the only other double-digit goal scorer on the squad. Junior Carter Brand has been facilitating the offense and has dished out a team-high 13 assists while sophomore Michael McGarry ranks second with nine. The Saints have used four different athletes at the face off with junior Tim Ladner taking the majority of the attempts. Ladner is 67-of-107 (.626) at the 'X' this season and leads the team with 37 ground balls.
  • Freshman Jaiden Terry and sophomore Kyle Keesee lead the Saints with six caused turnovers each. Two others have five CTOs each. In the cage, three different Saints have seen action. Junior Cory Lyons has seen the majority of the action with 43 saves and an 11.62 goals against average. He has a 3-1 record this season and has seen 45 goals scored against him.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Saints have met seven times in men's lacrosse with the Saints winning all seven match-ups. The closest contest between the two programs occurred last season as the Saints escaped with a 12-11 victory at home. The Saints scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:05 left in the contest. Current senior Sean Nolan scored two goals and handed out two assists to lead the team with four points on the day. The Saints two leading scorers from the contest, Owen Consoletti and Gavin Kesselring, as well as the goalkeeper, William Bexter, exhausted their eligibility at the end of the 2022 season.

  • Florida Southern will host the Saints on Saturday after a busy week of competition for the team. FSC has a two-game win streak ahead of the Thursday match against RV Rollins this afternoon with 6-1 wins against Bates and Eckerd the last week. Against the Tritons, Mocs swept the doubles point with only a #2 singles court loss in the match. At #4, Elliott Altman lost his second set but rebounded with a gritty 10-5 third set and flight win ahead of a 6-1 win. Tuesday's match against Bates had a slow start for the Mocs with the Bobcats sweeping the doubles field, but a fiery Moccasins squad stole back the momentum with wins on all six singles courts.
  • No. 4 Flagler will travel to Lakeland in a massive match for the Mocs. The Saints have a 1-0 outdoor record with wins against Rollins (5-2). Their match against No. 3 Saint Leo was postponed due to weather in what could've been a great match before the Saints took part in the ITA DII National Indoor Championships with losses to No. 5 Wayne State and No. 1 Barry. Flagler did win against No. 14 Embry-Riddle in an indoor competition before facing the Mocs on Saturday to resume their outdoor season.
  • HISTORY: Both teams have faced each other in 15 matches in its history, with a 4-11 record for the Mocs. FSC went on the road to St. Augustine last season where they lost 6-1 early in the season but did get a win in the 2020 season with a 5-2 home game. With a top-five team in the nation, Mocs will look to keep the community rolling with a great run at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

The game will be a white out. is coming off a 71-59 loss at Saint Leo. Redshirt senior Ashley Shell scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the loss.
  • Sophomore Arielle Dabu scored 12 points and junior Maria Llorente added 9 points for the Mocs.Redshirt senior Ashley Shell leads the Mocs in points per game and rebounds at 13.8 and 6.6 per game. Senior Domenica Zamora and Dabu are also averaging double digits at 11.4 and 10.5 points per contest respectively.
  • As a squad, Florida Southern ranks 6th in the conference in points per game at 67.7 points, and is 7th in points allowed at 66.2.
  • Barry is coming off an 74-46 loss against Tampa. Dasiah Thornton scored 11 points and Ambar Ramirez scored 9 points in the loss.
  • Barry is lead in scoring by Chiara Fusari, who averages 10.0 points per game, while teammate Dasiah Thornton averages 8.5.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a 93-76 loss at Saint Leo. Redshirt junior Jadin Booth led the Mocs with 27 points.
  • Redshirt senior EJ Dambreville recorded another double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson scored 9 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss.
  • Booth leads the Mocs and the conference in points per game at 21.9. Dambreville averages 17.8 points and averages 9.9 rebounds per game. Anderson averages 14.3 points per game to round out Mocs players averaging double figures.
