Mocs Minutes: Spring Break Wraps Up With Several Weekend Home Contests

  • No. 22 Florida Southern cracked the top 25 in the ITA poll released yesterday after a current five-match winnings streak for the Mocs. FSC has won the last two matches in a 7-0 decision and faces a very good No. 16 GVSU squad this Friday. The busy week for men's tennis began with a 7-0 win over Michigan Tech which Reese Hilsen earned his first collegiate win with a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Mario Garoz continued his run with a now nine-match win streak in singles as Matteo Feggi and Chris Fok Kow has won six in a row ahead of a No. 8 doubles pairing ranking announced on Wednesday, the only SSC school with doubles ranking in the top 20. The red-hot Mocs look to continue that streak with a big competition against the Lakers.
  • No. 16 Grand Valley State will take on the Mocs after matches against Dayton Beach on Monday where the Lakers lost 6-1 on the road. GVSU was registering votes in the last ITA poll before moving into the top 20 rankings with an 8-2 overall record before a match against a top Saint Leo program. Before the loss against the Eagles, GVSU had won six straight matches, many in commanding fashion. Lakers are led in doubles by Freddy Cossio and Jack Dausman, who are riding a seven-match win streak before a 6-1 loss to No. 3 Saint Leo yesterday afternoon.
  • Southern New Hampshire will travel to Lakeland on Saturday to face the Mocs with an early 4-1 record to start the season. The Penmen won its last match in a 6-1 score against Colgate University and have only lost to Babson College in a 4-3 loss at home. After winning doubles against Colgate, SNHU won all but one singles court in two courts. On #5, Aron Ouwejan lost in three sets for the only court loss.
  • HISTORY: Mocs have faced the Lakers four times previously and won each of them, the last being a 6-1 decision in 2020 before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. Mocs hosted the Lakers in all but one of those matches, the first being a neutral site win in Winter Park. Against the Penmen, Mocs again shutout their opponent with a 6-0 overall record, the last being a 7-0 win in 2020. FSC has only given up four points in the previous six matches.

  • Florida Southern is heading to its first big two day tournament of the seasons they travel to compete in the Beach Bash hosted by Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala.
  • In the last tri-match hosted by FSC in the #2 seed was Sarah Crocker and Ashli Mckenny, who battled it out together but fell in three sets (21-19, 21-15, 15-11). The rest of the Moccasins fell in two sets as Saint Leo won all sets for the second straight time this season. Against the Tritons of Eckerd College the Mocs tried to bounce back in game two of the trimatch but also fell in all straight sets.
  • Huntingdon The Hawks increased their record to 13-6 with a 5-0 victory over the Panthers of LaGrange going into the weekend bash. The Hawks are led by Ashlen Janoski and Reee Rhodes who are the top flight for Huntingdon. The win puts the Hawks on a one game win streak.
  • Chattanooga This will be the Mocs first Division 1 opponent they are facing this season as the UTC Mocs are 1-3 with a one game losing streak. The Mocs entered the first weekend of competition at Southern Miss two weekends ago with a limited roster due to injuries. The team had to forfeit the No. 5 pairing before play started and kicked off each match with a 1-0 deficit. UTC earned its first victory of the season over Spring Hill College in 3-2 fashion back on February 26. The Mocs saw victories at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 pairings to help clinch the team victory.
  • Jacksonville State will face its second DI opponent but the match will be the Gamecocks first match of the 2023 season. Jacksonville State's Kylee Quigley was named to the preseason All-Conference team for Conference USA opening up the season tomorrow.
  • HISTORY: This will be the third meeting against Huntingdon and Mocs as FSC is 2-0 against the Hawks. It'll mark the first ever matchups between UTC and Florida Southern and Jacksonville State.

  • Florida Southern is firing on all cylinders so far this season after a rocky start and currently has a 10-game win streak, the best since 2018. Mocs had another massive game against Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday to finish the sweep of the Panthers in a 12-2 score under the lights at Henley Field. Drew Cavanaugh led that game with three runs in four at-bats, including a two-run homer in the eighth. Lake Fisher earned the win by going four innings and four strikeouts. After giving up two runs in the fourth, Mocs responded with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, a new best for a single inning this season. Moccasin relievers took care of business shutting out the Panthers the rest of the game.
  • Mocs are batting .317 as a team with strong improvement the last few weeks. FSC has a league-high 28 home runs, for an average of 1.65 homers a game (12th best in NCAA Division II). Cavanaugh is tied for first in the SSC in homers (27th in nation and 18th among Division II for homer runs per game) and has a conference-best .824 slugging percentage and 1.423 OPS. Jeff Liquori and Mitch Donofrio have five homers apiece and Bryce Safferwich with four. With 15 walks this season, Cavanaugh is 13th in the nation for base on balls per game. Safferwich leads with .438 batting average, with 1.87 hits ber game, good for top 30 in DII.
  • On the mound, Florida Southern has greatly improved with Nathan Madej leading the conference and fifth in the nation for total strikeouts, 44. He averages 14.14 strikeouts per nine innings for a top 15 placement in the nation. Aric McAtee leads starters with a 2.14 ERA in his four starts and 26 strikeouts. Jordan Fox and Madej each have three wins on the season. For a second consecutive time, Collin Camarigg entered in the top of the ninth and struck out three each appearance to keep the Mocs winning streak alive. Camarigg has 17 strikeouts in his seven appearances and 11.1 innings pitched.
  • Seton Hill, registering votes in the NCBWA at one point this season, is in Florida facing a variety of teams during spring break. The Griffins beat West Virginia Wesleyan College last week before a 2-1 loss to Minnesota State University on Sunday. Against No. 2 Tampa, Seton Hill lost 112-5 before again returning with a win against Ashland on Wednesday. Seton Hill took on Wayne State yesterday and was handed a 12-2 loss in a neutral-site matchup. Griffins gave up 14 hits in the game as Wayne State racked up the runs throughout the innings including a two-run homer and 3 RBI double by Brett Zimmerman.
  • The Griffins are led by Jack Whalen with a .429 batting average in nine games with five others over .300 and an additional three more in limited appearances. Overall, the team is batting .297 in 11 games with eight homers and 107 hits. On the mound, Seton Hill relies on Aidan Layton with a 1.84 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched and two starts. Other starters include Jon McCullough, Kevin Vaupel, and Brandon Bergert. The team's ERA is 3.91 and has a .223 opposing batting average. They have given up only six homers all year.
  • HISTORY: Last year's bout against the Griffins was the first time in program history of these teams played each other, being a 4-3 win in Lakeland March 9, 2022. Both teams traded homers in the first and second with Duncan Hunter a two-run score in the first for the Mocs. A 3-2 game heading into the third led to a pitching duel as neither would score until the eighth when Seton Hill tied the game. Mocs took back the lead with an RBI single by Tor Sehnert in the bottom of the eighth to win the game. Dawson Lane was the winning pitcher that game.

  • Florida Southern softball continues their home 16-game home stretch as they are jumping back into Sunshine State Conference play this weekend hosting Florida Tech in a three-game series. The Moccasins are fresh off a doubleheader split against non-conference opponent Lander where the falls fell due to errors in game one 7-4, before winning game two in walkoff fashion 2-1.
  • As a team FSC has been sitting at fourth in the conference. The Mocs are on a one game winning streak after the split on Wednesday. Two players led FSC in the split as junior Kiki Morris and junior Skyler Ralstin both went 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and one RBI.
  • Junior Taylor Thomas is leading the way supporting a .471 batting average behind Thomas Ralstin batting a .359 and then senior Jessica Bryson batting a .319. Thomas is totaling 24 hits, six runs, six doubles, one homerun and 12 RBIs. Ralstin has gone 14-for-39 with six runs, two doubles, and five RBIs. While Bryson is batting 15-for-47 from the plate, with seven runs, five RBIs, and two doubles. Junior Mel Rogers is leading FSC from the circle with four wins and one loss and a 2.13 ERA appearing in nine games. The right-handed pitcher has 26 strikeouts on the season, allowing 10 earned runs. Junior Ashley Blessin has started in nine games pitching five complete games with the most strikeouts sending 28 back to the dugout.
  • Florida Tech is currently on a two game win streak with both those wins being in shutout form against Alderson Broaddus winning in early innings first by an 8-0 decision in five and then 8-0 in 6 innings to close the doubleheader. The Panthers last conference matchup was against #23 Saint Leo as Florida Tech fell in the series 2-1 splitting the doubleheader with a 4-2 win before falling in a shutout 8-0. The Lions won the opener 2-0 last Friday.
  • The Panthers are led by Cheyenne Nelson batting a .402 with 33 hits, two doubles, one homer, and 12 RBIs. In the 300s, Florida Tech had Ella Niles and Jolie Miracle with a .370 average for Niles and .307 for Miracle. Niles has just 17 hits with 11 runs, and one RBI, while Miracle is leading the Panthers with runners batted in, bringing in 17 on 23 hits, five doubles, one triple and a homer. In the circle, Samantha Guider has seen the most action in the circle owning a 1-3 record with seven appearances two complete games striking out 16 batters.
  • HISTORY: This will be the 133rd meeting between the two teams as the Mocs lead the record with 99 wins. Despite falling 2-1 last year the Mocs are 51-13 at home.

  • No. 19 Florida Southern is going for its third win-in-a-row which would makr the longest winning streak of the season so far for the Mocs. FSC is in the midst of a six-game homestand and are currently 2-2 during the stretch.
  • Senior Sean Nolan became the new Florida Southern College men's lacrosse career points record holder after dishing out three assists and scoring one goal against Clark on Wednesday. He now has 231 career points which surpassed Jeff Atlas (2019-22) who scored 230 points during his career in Lakeland. He is also 15 goals away from the career goals scored record at FSC held by Dane Sorensen (2012-15).
  • Nolan leads the offensive attack for the Mocs as he ranks second in the Sunshine State Conference with 3.33 goals per game after 20 goals over the first six games of the season. He also is second in the conference in points per contest at 4.83. Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck and freshman Nolan Tighe sit second and third on the team in goals scored with 15 and 10, respectively, this season. Nolan and graduate student Andrew Medeiros have dished out a team-best nine assists each while graduate student Jay Minor sits just behind with eight. At the face off, it has been freshman Jacob Czyz handling most of duties as he has gone 66-of-142 (.464) while fellow freshman Luke Henricksen has won 25-of-40 this season (.625).
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team-best 16 turnovers this season while scooping up 21 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Senior Zac Fitzgerald ranks second on the team with 11 caused turnovers while classmate Lucas Sommers ranks third with eight. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season led by graduate student Maxwell Freestone who has a 2-2 record this season with a 12.69 goals against average. Freestone has made 43 saves in 207-plus minutes of action. Junior Michael Simone has started the last two contests and has a perfect 2-0 record with a 6.29 goals against average in 104-plus minutes of action. He has 18 saves and has seen action in five of the six contests this season.
  • Young Harris has lost seven of its last eight contests with the lone victory coming in overtime versus Chowan on the road 16-15. The Mountain Lions most recently faced off with Sunshine State Conference opponent Saint Leo and fell 19-6 on the road.
  • Freshman David Traywick leads the scoring for the Mountain Lions as he has scored 18 goals through eight games this season. Freshmen Tim Blanch and Colburn Connelly have each scored double-figure goals this season with 15 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Tommy Chriszt has dished out a team-best nine assists while Blanch sits in second with five helpers. Junior Jacob Haas handles the majority of the face offs for the Mountain Lions and has won 78-of-165 (.473).
  • Sophomores Kieran Isbister and Ben Soenen lead the defense with 18 and 16 caused turnovers each, respectively. The Mountain Lions have used a pair of goalkeepers this season with sophomore Dylan Wilbur starting all eight contests. He has a 1-7 record with a 17.79 goals against average over 468-plus minutes of action. He has made 101 saves this season.
  • HISTORY: Saturday's contest will be the third meeting between Florida Southern and Young Harris. The Mocs are 2-0 in the series having won 21-7 in 2013 at home and 10-3 in 2016 on the road.

  • No. 2 Florida Southern is coming off a 20-7 win over Notre Dame on March 9, where 12 different players all scored a goal in the win. Sammy Gorrasi led all scorers for the Mocs with a hat trick where she added one assist for a team-high four points.
  • In the win over the Falcons, Olivia Manghisi, Madison Tare, Ellie Griffin, Hailey Daleo, Abby McFerren, and Emma Dudley all registered two goals in the game. Jackie Stoller, Giana Murphy, Danielle Dunn, Lizzy Lynch, and Chloe Webber all tallied one goal in the game. Between the pipes, Rylie Rittberg and Sydney O'Neill made two combined stops in 30 minutes of playing time apiece.
  • The Mocs continue to average 17.5 goals per game and allow 10.7 per game to their opponents. Stoller paces the team in points on the year with 25 on 13 goals and 12 assists while Murphy is close behind at 21 (13 G, 8 A). Daleo is the teams leading scorer with 15 goals and is second in points with 18. Lynch, McFerren, and Tare all stand at over 10 goals on the year, Tare with 11 in just three games.
  • No. 6 Pace comes to Berend Field after a week off, and a week after defeating the former No. 1 East Stroudsburg Warriors. The Setters defeated the Warriors 16-6 and are 3-0 on the young season.
  • The leading scorers for Pace in the upset was Angelina Porcello with five goals while Jolie Urraro tied with a team leading six points on four goals and two assists. Two players split time in goal in Ashley Belfiore earning the win with four goals and three saves while Samantha Tanguay with two goals and two saves in 30 minutes.
  • As a team, the Setters average 17.5 goals per game and allow 5.5 per game to opponents. Porcello is the team leader in points in two games with 10 on nine goals and one assist while Emma Rafferty has eight goals. Sydney Juvelier has eight points on the season with four goals and four assists. In goal, Belfiore is 2-0 in goal with 60 total minutes played while tallying seven saves.
  • History:This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
