LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team opened up the Sunshine State Conference series against Saint Leo University with a 3-0 loss on Friday evening at Chris Bellotto Field.
With the loss, the Moccasins move to 16-15 overall and 5-8 in the SSC while the Lions improve to 29-5 on the season and 11-2 in the conference.
It was anyone's game until the top of the fourth when Saint Leo scored on a fielder's choice that put the Lions up 1-0. In the top of the fifth, Saint Leo increased their lead to 3-0 with back-to-back RBI singles giving the Lions a 3-0 advantage.
Florida Southern continued to try and put pressure on Saint Leo in the bottom of the sixth when senior
Jessica Bryson singled to the shortstop and beat out her throw to first base for the only hit of the game from the Moccasins.
Bryson moved around the bases on a sac bunt from senior
Kelsey Peck on two outs to finally get a runner into scoring position, but the Lions forced an out, not allowing the Mocs to score.
Junior
Taylor Thomas and sophomore
Destiny Colgate reached base on a hit by a pitch and a walk allowing the Mocs a second opportunity to score, but both were left stranded as Saint Leo took game one of the 3-game series 3-0.
