Mocs Minutes: Multiple Teams on the Road; Men's Tennis Hosts Senior Day in Midweek Action

  • Florida Southern is coming off its second Sunshine State Conference series victory of the season as the Moccasins took two of three at home versus Lynn this past weekend. The Mocs took the opening gave over the Fighting Knights 10-3 Thursday evening before splitting the Friday doubleheader, winning game one 2-1 before falling in game two 3-2. Sophomore Destiny Colgate led the way Thursday as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, two runs scored and a double. Colgate then went 2-for-3 in game one of the doubleheader on Friday with an RBI and another double. Senior Mel Rogers went the distance in the circle on Friday with three Ks and just one run given up to earn her eighth win of the season.
  • The Mocs currently sit eighth in the Sunshine State Conference standings and are just one loss behind seventh place Florida Tech. FSC's .288 batting average ranks sixth in the SSC while the Mocs' 46 doubles lead the conference.
  • Junior Taylor Thomas continues to lead the way for the Mocs supporting a .383 batting average overall which ranks 11th in the conference while Destiny Colgate (.376) moved into second on the team in batting average after her strong weekend versus Lynn. Juniors Skyler Ralstin (.373) and Kiki Morris (.355) join Thomas and Colgate for four Moccasin hitters with plus-.300 batting averages. Thomas leads the squad with 11 doubles this season while senior Kelsey Peck has provided the power with a team-best seven home runs. Thomas also leads the team in RBI with 26 while Peck sits in second with 20.
  • In the circle, the Mocs have used seven different pitchers with senior Mel Rogers and junior Ashley Blessin leading the way with eight wins each. Rogers is 8-3 on the season with a team-best 3.06 ERA while striking out 39 opposing batters. Blessin is 8-6 with a 4.19 ERA and leads the team with 49 Ks this season. Blessin has seen a team-high 92.1 innings of work followed by Rogers who has 79.1.
  • Flagler recently snapped an 11-game losing streak by winning the third and final game of a series with Lander. The Saints have faced six Sunshine State Conference opponents this season including Barry, Eckerd, Embry-Riddle, Nova Southeastern, Rollins and Saint Leo and have a 2-8 record in those contests.
  • Junior Cassidy Crump leads the Saints offensively with a .352 batting average while junior Paige Maseda sits in second at .298. Crump also leads the team with 20 RBI followed by Maseda, junior Trinity Fry and Madelyn Childs who all have 15.
  • The Saints have used four different pitchers this season led by freshman Jordan Sheets who boasts a 3.80 ERA and a 6-10 overall record. The rookie has 41 strikeouts this season and has seen a team-high 95.2 innings of work. Sophomore Rachel Hester has seen the second-most innings of work with 70.2. Hester is 5-7 in the circle with a 4.85 ERA and a team-best 46 Ks.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday's contest with be the 26th and 27th meeting between the Mocs and Saints. Flagler holds the series lead 16-9 but FSC took 2-of-3 versus the Saints last season including winning 1-0 in St. Augustine before splitting a doubleheader in Lakeland, falling 5-4 before winning 2-1 in the nightcap.

  • No. 22 Florida Southern will travel to Daytona Beach for the last match of the regular season. The Mocs upset No. 9 Tampa last time out with a 4-3 win on Senior Day. Rightfully so, the last matches came down to the two seniors, Laura Vetter and Isabella Bolivar. Earlier, the Mocs lost the doubles point but had early singles wins by Kennedi Brown and Vivien Charvatova. Olivia Bryant lost her first set but rebounded for a win and it was Bolivar a three-set win to clinch the match for the Mocs.
  • Mocs remain in the top 25 of national rankings and have two singles players nationally ranked. Laia Pasini is No. 48 in the nation and Bryant 42nd among DII players. FSC was named one of 10 teams under consideration for the postseason from the first round of NCAA Regional Rankings. The first ranked position regional rankings will come out later this week.
  • No. 39 Embry-Riddle will host the Mocs in the last match of the regular season. ERAU won their last matchup with a 7-0 shutout of Palm Beach Atlantic last week and a close 5-2 loss against No. 4 Lynn before that. Embry-Riddle has only lost matches to top-16 opponents so far this year. The Eagles have one ranked singles player, with Itxaso Blanco 10th in the nation among DII players. Blanco and Maja Issler pair for a No. 29 doubles ranking.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have a six-match win streak over the Eagles currently, the last time out a 4-3 win in Lakeland late in the season. Overall, the Mocs are 9-5 against ERAU and 7-3 in the last 10 matchups.

  • No. 5 Florida Southern travels to No. 21 Saint Leo Wednesday after splitting last week's games, 15-14 loss at then-no. 5 Tampa before knocking off then-no. 7 Rollins 17-15. Jackie Stoller paced the team on the week with 12 points on nine goals and three assists. The Wayland, Mass. native scored nine of her 10 shots on goal with three goals against Tampa and six against Rollins. Sydney O'Neill earned her first career win in the 17-15 win over Rollins while notching her career-high in saves with 12 against Tampa.
  • Stoller is the team leader in points (67), goals (38), and assists (29), while Hailey Daleo has 37 goals, chasing to be the top on the team. The draw control crown goes to Gina Verrone with 68 where she also leads the team in ground balls (32) as well as caused turnovers (23).
  • As a team, the Mocs are hovering around 17.46 goals per game and hold opponents to 12.15. Rylie Rittberg leads the team in minutes played (482:48) while she has a team-best saves (47) and is 8-1 in goal. Sydney O'Neill holds a 1-1 record after her win over Rollins where she has 23 total saves including her career mark on the road at Tampa.
  • No. 21 Saint Leo snapped a two-game skid with a 15-11 win at Florida Tech Saturday where the Lions concluded the weekend with a 1-1 mark falling to No. 14 Lynn 17-10 on April 5. In the win over the Panthers, Fiona McLaughlin paced the Green and Gold with seven goals for seven points with eight total shots. Ashlee Wilsynski had three points on a goal and two assists. In goal, Jessica Harclerode made 11 saves and allowed 11 goals to earn the win.
  • McLaughlin is the team leader in points (52), and goals scored (46) while Wilsynski, who is second in both points (42) and goals scored (28), leads the team in assists with 14 this season.
  • As a team, the Lions barely hold the advantage over their opponents, 12.46 goals per game to 11.00. Harclerode is the only goalie of record, standing at 9-4 in goal with 731 minutes of action with 124 saves and 136 goals against.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 12-0 all-time against Saint Leo including a 5-0 mark on the road. In the last meeting in Dade City, then-no. 8 FSC defeated then-no. 20 SLU 17-4 on March 24, 2021. In the last meeting on April 13, 2022, then-no. 9 Florida Southern defeated Saint Leo 25-17. Hailey Daleo led the Mocs in goals (6) while tying with a game-high eight points. Madison Tare finished with a hattrick of goals and assists for six points, matching Abby McFerren's six points on two goals and four assists. Fiona McLaughlin had a team-high six points with six goals to lead the Lions. Florida Southern averages 17.83 goals in the series while Saint Leo averages 6.5.

  • No. 16 Florida Southern hits the road for another tough Sunshine State Conference contest as the Mocs face No. 6 Rollins. The Mocs and Tars last met in the 2022 Sunshine State Conference semifinals in Winter Park with the Mocs coming away with a 12-11 overtime victory, sending FSC to the SSC Championship. Senior Sean Nolan scored the game-winner in overtime with just one second left on the shot clock in a dramatic end to an exciting contest. FSC recently saw its program-record eight game win streak snapped by nationally-ranked Tampa but a win Wednesday will put the Mocs right back in the SSC Regular Season Championship picture.
  • Senior Nick Shannon broke the single season caused turnovers record in the Mocs most recent contest with Tampa. Shannon had five CTs versus Saint Leo to tie the single season record at FSC with 38 on the season. He added two more versus Tampa to set the new single season mark at 40 with three regular season contests still on the schedule.
  • As a team, the Moccasins rank high in several statistical categories within NCAA Division II. FSC leads the country in total assists (139), caused turnovers per contest (15.00), total ground balls (578), total points (393) and scoring offense (19.54). The Mocs also rank second in the nation in ground balls per game (44.46), points per game (30.23) and scoring margin (+10.23) while ranking inside the top ten in assists per game (5th, 10.69), opponent clear percentage (5th, 0.728), clearing percentage (6th, 0.896) and shot percentage (9th, 0.344). Senior Nick Shannon continues to lead the NCAA in caused turnovers per contest (3.08) while junior goalkeeper Michael Simone ranks ninth in the country in goals against average (8.45).
  • Nolan leads the offensive attack for the Mocs as he ranks second in the Sunshine State Conference in points per game (4.62) while ranking third in assists per contest (1.69) and fifth in goals per contest (2.92). Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck leads the team in goals with 40 this season while ranking third in the SSC in goals per game (3.08). Six others have produced double-digit tallies this season including freshman Nolan Tighe (31), graduate student Jay Minor (24), junior Brendan Glasser (19), graduate student Andrew Medeiros (17), sophomore Brydon Robichaud (14) and sophomore Owen McCusker (10). Nolan leads the team with 22 assists while Medeiros sits in second with 21, followed by Minor with 20. At the face off, it has been Czyz handling most of duties as he has gone 165-of-300 (.550) while fellow freshman Luke Henricksen has won 50-of-98 this season (.510) including 13-of-24 (.542) versus nationally-ranked Tampa. Czyz also leads the team in ground balls this season with 97 (7.5 per contest).
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team, conference and NCAA-best 40 turnovers this season while scooping up 51 ground balls to rank second on the squad. graduate student Craig Connor ranks second on the team with 18 caused turnovers while senior Zac Fitzgerald ranks third with 17. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season with junior Michael Simone seeing the majority of the action. Simone has started the last nine contests and has an 8-1 record with an 8.45 goals against average in 482-plus minutes of action. He has 84 saves and has seen action in 12 of the 13 contests this season.
  • No. 6 Rollins has won four-straight heading into Wednesday's contest including a 12-6 victory over then-No. 3 Tampa in Winter Park. The victory marked the first win over the Spartans in program history for the Tars. The Tars lone loss this season came against Colorado Mesa in a neutral site contest held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Colorado Mesa earned the 15-10 victory.
  • Sophomore Jack Johnstone leads the Tars with 30 goals this season. Junior Mikey Berkman ranks second with 21 tallies followed closely by sophomore Grant Hansen with 20. Three others have tallied double-digit goals including junior Justin White (19), freshman Logan Myers (14) and junior William Metz (10). Berkman has handed out a team-high 17 assists while Hansen sits in second with 14. Sophomores Thomas Garvin and Lake Baker have split time at the face off. Garvin has won 91-of-150 (.607) while Baker has taken 53-of-107 (.495). Garvin leads the team with 40 ground balls as well.
  • Graduate student Justin Isenhour leads the defense with 24 caused turnovers followed by sophomore Evan Tessler who has 15. The Tars have used six different goalkeepers this season led by graduate student Shahe Katchadurian who boasts an 8-1 record with an 8.67 goals against average. He has made 116 saves this season and has seen action in nine of the 10 games played. His 491-plus minutes leads the team by over 400 minutes.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday's meeting will be the 17th contest all-time between the Tars and Mocs on the lacrosse field. The Mocs boast a 10-6 record in those 16 meetings with the last Rollins victory coming in 2021 in Lakeland, 17-14. The Mocs swept the Tars last season winning in Lakeland during the regular season 16-11 before knocking out the Tars in the SSC semifinals in Winter Park 12-11 in overtime. The most recent FSC regular season victory in Winter Park came during the 2017 season, a 9-8 victory.

  • No. 27 Florida Southern will host Queens College for Senior Day on Thursday in the final regular season match. The ceremony will be live-streamed pregame honoring JP Fujiwara as the Moccasin senior. Last time out for the Mocs, FSC lost a conference match against No. 34 Embry-Riddle on Thursday. FSC lost the doubles point by a narrow margin and was unable to tally enough in singles for a win leading to a 5-2 loss.
  • FSC was named one of 10 teams under consideration in the first NCAA Tennis Regional Rankings last week with the next round of ranked regional positions announced later this week. FSC has one singles player nationally ranked in Mario Garoz, who is ranked 75th. Garoz was one of two singles courts with a win over the Eagles last week, a three-set court win. Among doubles, Chris Fok Kow and Matteo Feggi is eighth in the nation, with a close loss at ERAU last time out.
  • No. 44 Queens will travel to Florida to take on a few teams in the Sunshine State. The Knights will take on Barry in Orlando tomorrow, Mocs on Thursday, and Rollins on Friday, before returning to New York on Saturday. Queens has a four-match win streak currently, with a 4-2 win over Le Moyne last time out. The Knights won their doubles point and continued into singles with wins on the #3, 5, and 6 courts as #2 went unfinished.
  • HISTORY: These teams have faced each other twice in their history, the last being an 8-1 win at home in 2012. Mocs won 6-3 the year before in the first matchup between the teams. Despite a non-conference and non-region matchup, the Mocs will look to lock in another top 50 matchup win to end the regular season.
