Women's Soccer Tabbed Fourth in SSC Preseason Poll

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference has tabbed the Florida Southern College women's soccer team fourth in the 2023 SSC Women's Soccer Preseason Poll.

The Moccasins received 74 points, including three first-place votes in the preseason coaches poll. Nova Southeastern was picked to finish first among the 11 conference teams, with Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech the remaining teams ahead of FSC.

FSC won the regular-season title in 2022, the first SSC title for the women's soccer program after the Mocs were picked last in the 2022 preseason ranking. Florida Southern will open the 2023 season on Sept. 1 against Spring Hill College, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.

Head coach Gerry Lucey enters his first year at the helm for the Moccasins, bringing a lengthy resume of success in the SSC. Lucey won the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship as the head coach for the University of Tampa and remains the winningest coach in program history with 114 wins for the Spartans. He was named the SSC Coach of the Year and has had five SSC conference titles and two SSC regular-season titles.

"I'm looking forward to a very challenging and exciting schedule this fall," said Lucey on the upcoming 2023 campaign. "The SSC is the top conference in the nation from top to bottom. There are no easy games, so we know we need to be prepared and ready for each game. The team performed very well last regular season and we know they'll be a target on our backs this year. I've always embraced being the target and hope that we can reach the lofty heights set by the team last season."
