Mocs Fall to Bearcats in Sunday Afternoon Battle

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team was unable to find the net as the Moccasins lost 3-0 against Lander University on Sunday afternoon at Berend Field.

The Mocs (2-2, 0-0 SSC) were out-shot in the first half and were unable to net any of their three shots on goal in the second half for the 3-0 loss. The Bearcats (4-0, 0-0 PBC) scored their first goal in the first half and had back-to-back second-half goals to remain undefeated with the 3-0 win.

Florida Southern had two shots in the first half, both off target, with a couple of free kick opportunities that were cut off by the LU keeper. In the 16th minute, Lander had a shot on goal that Moccasin keeper Jenny Staten saved, but it was the 37th minute in which the Bearcats found the goal.

A congested offensive push by the Bearcats led to a cut-back pass into the box for LU's Sexton to score on her left foot and take a 1-0 lead. The Mocs had a shot by Bria Weldon out wide shortly after, with an FSC crossbar save and defensive block in the final two minutes of the first half to keep the game close with only one goal separating the times at the break.

The second half had a tough start with an FSC miscue in the backfield from a short pass to Staten that was intercepted by Lander for an easy goal and a 2-0 game. Two minutes later in the 58th minute, a handball in the box led to a penalty opportunity, which the Bearcats capitalized for the 3-0 lead.

FSC led a charge that included shots on goal by Alison Jenkins, Morgan Elliott, and Sierra Spirk but none found the net to cut into the Bearcats lead. The game ended with seven shots by the Mocs, three on goal, and five of the shots in the second half, but still a 3-0 loss. Staten's first half save was her only save as Lander's keeper finished with three. Both teams were nearly even in corners, with Lander a one-corner advantage in the full 90 minutes.

The Mocs will take their first road trip of the season with two games in Texas, the first against St. Mary's University on Thursday, Sept. 14, and the second on Sept. 16 against Texas A&M International University.
