SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team finished with a 1-1 tie in its first road game of the season as the Mocs faced St. Mary's University Thursday night.
The Mocs (2-2-1, 0-0 SSC) equalized the match with an interception and one-on-one goal by
Bianca Purpura in the second half and settled for the tie. The Rattlers (1-1-3, 0-0 LSC) scored halfway through the first half before relinquishing the lead in the second for the 1-1 tie to end regulation.
Florida Southern pushed the offense early with a shot in the first two minutes by
Malia Brost and another shortly after by
Sierra Spirk with a shot that was blocked on its way to the net. FSC continued to fire with a shot by
Jasmin Adames, the Mocs' third shot in 10 minutes before the Rattlers managed a shot that was blocked.
The first save of the game came in the 14
th minute as FSC's
Madison Male had a shot to the bottom left that was corralled by St. Mary's keeper. Both teams continued to attack at both ends before a free kick in the 27
th minute set up an eventual goal by St. Mary's. FSC's keeper
Jenny Staten kept the game 1-0 with a save a few minutes later, with the game still within reach by the end of the first 45 minutes. FSC had nine shots in the first half, and a combined 16 shots between the two teams.
The second half had a similar start with shots as FSC and St. Mary's traded attempts.
Bridgett Barrowman had an opportunity that went wide, as did the next three from St. Mary's. FSC's
Jordan King had a scoring opportunity in the 68
th minute that was saved, as was a shot by the Rattlers at the other end of the field.
Florida Southern tied the game in the 72
nd minute after a great interception in the St. Mary's backline by Purpura led to a one-on-one shot and goal resetting the game a one apiece. Both teams traded possession for the next 15 minutes with a final shot by the Mocs'
Olivia Walker was off target and the game ended with a 1-1 draw.
An offensive matchup, FSC finished the game with 13 shots and St. Mary's with 14. Both sides had two saves as Spirk and
Rilee Hasegawa led the team with two shots each.
The Mocs have one game remaining in the Lone Star state with a matchup against Texas A&M International University Saturday night at 8 p.m. EDT in Laredo, Texas.
