Women's Soccer Fall to Tritons in Conference Play

Lily O'Neil makes first collegiate start in goal

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team could not find the net in a 1-0 loss to Eckerd College on Tuesday night in a rescheduled match on Berend Field.

The Mocs (3-4-4, 0-3-3 SSC) only had one shot on goal in the game which was a defensive matchup. The Tritons (3-3-4, 2-2-1 SSC) scored in the 22nd minute of the game and fended off any other Moccasin threat to win the conference bout 1-0.

Neither team fired a shot in the first eight minutes of the game with lots of possession changes and defensive action. Despite Eckerd taking the first shot, the first goal-scoring opportunity was by Rilee Hasegawa and the Mocs, which needed to be saved by EC keeper Cadence Talbert.

A defensive slip by FSC led to an EC steal by Amy Woodhead, who took the ball half the length of the field herself for a solo goal and a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Quick to respond, Sierra Spirk had a great shot that was blocked by the Tritons followed by a few off-target shots by Hasegawa and Ally Prentice that sent the game into halftime with a 1-0 EC game.

The second half remained a defensive matchup with a few more shots thrown in from the first half. FSC had shots by Spirk, Ashley Shimberg, and an incredible shot by Ori Gotauco that nearly made it to the net, but was blocked by the EC defense before going in. Moccasin keeper Lily O'Neil had a big save in the 72nd minute to keep the game within reach, but the FSC offense was unable to capitalize with a 1-0 loss to the Tritons.

Both teams finished the game with eight shots each, though EC held a 3-to-1 advantage in shots on goal. O'Neil, making her first collegiate start in goal, finished the game with two saves, both in the second half. Neither team had a corner in the first half but packed on the attack with 5-to-4 corners in favor of the Tritons.

The Mocs will continue their homestand with a match against Polk State College tomorrow, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. on Berend Field.
