MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team traveled south to take on Barry University; fighting back, they tied the game twice but ultimately fell in Sunshine State Conference action 5-3 on Saturday evening.
The Moccasins (3-6-4, 1-6-2 SSC) were led by
Darcy Moffat, who scored two goals, followed by
Matthew Male, who scored the final goal for FSC. The Buccaneers (5-8-2, 3-5-1) had four different players score, with Stefan Momcilovic scoring the opening goal and the game-winner.
Barry got the game going early, scoring in the seventh minute for a 1-0 lead. The Bucs quickly increased their lead from a made penalty kick to take a 2-0 lead, but Moffat with a chip on his shoulder came back to score not even 30 seconds after the made penalty kick to cut the lead in half.
The Mocs continued to play aggressively with back-to-back shots on goal from
Ruben Linden and
Felix Tonne but were both saved by the Bucs keeper Linus Wirth in the 25th and 26th minute.
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell attacked Barry's defense as time started to dwindle, but Moffat found the back of the net for his second goal in the 45th minute to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the halftime break.
Out of the break, Barry fought back, taking back a one-goal lead with a goal from Juan Simoniello in the 54th minute to make it a 3-2 game. In Moccasins fashion, FSC came back to tie the game once again in the 57th minute as Male found the back of the net to make it a 3-3 game.
The Bucs went on a run putting all the offensive pressure on the Mocs defense having four consecutive shots with all being saved by Florida Southern's keeper
Lasse Dettmer until the final one found the back of the net to take back a 4-3 lead in the 67th minute
Barry continued the momentum from the last goal, not allowing FSC to get a shot on as the Bucs scored an insurance goal to get a 5-3 cushion as time ticked down to under 13 minutes of play. Skelcher-Maxwell had one final effort that just missed to the top left that a new keeper, Rafael Furlani, found to give Barry a 5-3 win at home.
Six different Moccasins put shots on the board, with Skelcher-Maxwell leading the way with three shots, Moffat with two, and
Dakota Henry, Tonne, Male, and Linden all with one shot. In between the poles, Dettmer finished with five saves on the night.
Florida Southern concludes the regular season this Wednesday, Nov. 6 with a makeup game at Eckerd College. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Petersburg, Fla.
