Mocs Soccer Drop SSC Contest to Barry 3-0

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team did not find the net with a 3-0 loss against Barry University on Saturday night at Berend Field.

The Mocs (5-6-2, 1-5-3 SSC) had a few great opportunities with shots on goal but were shut out in the conference match. The Buccaneers (7-5-2, 3-4-2 SSC) kept their playoff hopes alive with the win securing three points in the race for the Sunshine State Conference Championship.

The first half had a slow start for both teams in the windy conditions of Berend Field tonight. A shot for Barry in the 10th minute was the only action for the early part of the half, a shot that was saved by Moccasin keeper Lily O'Neil. However, a shot 10 minutes later was not able to be saved with a Buccaneer goal. A deep throw in deflected off a few players and right to the foot of Zoe Dick for the first goal of the game.

The Buccaneers had two more off target shots in the half as FSC fired off six shots in an attempt to tie the game. In the 36th minute, a bad pass by the Barry defense led to a clear shot for Sierra Spirk that was sent right to the keeper for a save. Shortly after, Alison Jenkins had a bending shot aiming for the right side of the net that was punched out by Barry. The deflection went straight to Jasmin Adames that had her rebound blocked and then saved on the second attempt to remain a 1-0 Barry lead into halftime.

The second half was trending toward FSC with shots by Rilee Hasegawa, Ashley Shimberg, and Jamie Klein, but all were off target. On the opposite side, Barry scored its second goal in the 75th minute after a failed header clearance went to Ashley Finn to score. The Bucs scored again in the 81st minute after a corner by Kaitlin Conway found the head of Cordelia Brown for the 3-0 Barry lead. A foul in the box allowed a penalty kick opportunity by Shimberg in the 85th minute, but that was saved by Barry to seal a 3-0 Buccaneer win.

The Moccasins outshot the Bucs 15-to-7, leading the opposition in both halves. Barry keeper Fernanda Mayrink finished with four saves as FSC's O'Neil had two. Both Shimberg and Hasegawa had four shots in the game to lead the team.

The Mocs will have their final home regular season game on Wednesday, Nov. 6 against Rollins College at 7 p.m. on Berend Field.
