LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team had two second-half goals to tie Rollins College 2-2 on Wednesday night on Berend Field.
The Moccasins (5-6-5, 1-5-4 SSC) had two goals in a span of seven minutes in the latter half of the second but settled for a tie in their Sunshine State Conference season finale. The Tars (8-4-2, 5-3-1 SSC) scored with under two minutes in the game to tie the game and walk away with one point toward their SSC playoff scenario.
Â
With just back-and-forth possession for the first few minutes of the game, Rollins capitalized on a cross and chest pass for Emma Griner to score in the seventh minute. Despite eight total shots and three shots on goal by the Tars, Moccasin keeper
Lily O'Neil kept the game within reach with two stellar saves within two minutes of each other.
Â
As FSC continued to fend off shots by Rollins, the offense had a few shots, notably a great opportunity by
Jasmine Adames which was just high to hit the crossbar and out. Other shots by
Madison Male and
Ally Prentice were off target to send the game into overtime with a 1-0 Rollins lead.
Â
Florida Southern entered the second half with rejuvenated energy with early shots by
Rilee Hasegawa and an interception by
Ashley Shimberg for a clear shot that was just barely wide of the net.
Megan Rhonemus got in the mix of shot-taking with another great shot by Adames that had to be saved. In the 75
th minute, a failed clearance by the Tars found Adames, who tied the game with a great steal and goal.
Â
With just under 10 minutes in the game, FSC took the lead off a great cross by
Morgan Elliott over the Rollins defense and a header for Shimberg to score. A final surge by Rollins was successful as Kayla Park scored off a long cross to chip the ball of O'Neil and tie the game with a minute left. Adames fired a late shot to win but was unsuccessful as the Mocs settled for the 2-2 tie to end conference play this season.
Â
Rollins led in shots 13-to-11 as O'Neill finished with two saves to Rollins keeper's one. Adames led the team with four shots off the bench and Shimberg was right behind with two as the FSC key shot-takers.
The Mocs will wrap up the regular season with a road match against Edward Waters on Tuesday, Nov. 12, set for a 2 p.m. start in Jacksonville.
