ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis team was unable to replicate last year's upset win as the Mocs lost 5-2 against No. 4 Flagler at the Pollard Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
The Mocs (0-2) lost the doubles point and battled in singles, but only managed two flight wins. The Saints (1-0) won their season opener with a strong performance on many of the courts to outlast the Moccasins in a 5-2 FC win.
For doubles,
Chris Fok Kow and
George Russell conceded the No. 1 court in a 6-2 fight, as did
Inaki Braun Simo and
Matthew Hewitt at the No. 3 court in a 6-0 loss. Court three went unfinished with the doubles point secured to the Saints.
A far more interesting match in singles as the Mocs took three of the courts into a third set as Russell won his first spring flight with FSC in a 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) battle at No. 1. Right next to him was Fok Kow that also went to three sets but narrowly lost in the third to the No. 1 singles player in the nation. Braun Simo was the final Moccasin court winner as he outlasted his opponent in the third set winning 10-8.
Mario Garoz, Hewitt, and
Bosko Boskovic wrapped up the rest of the FSC lineup this afternoon.
The Mocs will continue their road stretch and travel to West Palm Beach to face Palm Beach Atlantic University next Saturday, Feb. 17, set for a 3 p.m. start at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
