LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis team dominated its 2024 home opener with a 7-0 sweep of Bates College Thursday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The Mocs (2-2, 1-2 SSC) shut out the Bobcats in non-conference action with a doubles point win and dominated the singles competition with wins on all courts. The Bobcats (0-1) lost their season opener with a sole doubles flight win against the Division II Moccasins.
Florida Southern won the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts to guarantee the opening point.
Mario Garoz and
Ryan Rajakar finished with a 6-1 score at #2 and the pairing of
Inaki Braun Simo and
Matthew Hewitt won the tiebreak 7-6 (7-4) for the doubles point win.
Matteo Feggi and
Chris Fok Kow battled at #1 court a sent that flight to a tiebreak, but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-4) to the Bobcats.
In singles, each of the flights won in two sets in a sweeping victory for FSC. Garoz started the court wins with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, followed by
Bosko Boskovic in a 6-3, 6-1 score.
Gabriel Jornert had the third singles court win to seal the match victory with a 6-1, 6-1 score. Both wins by Jornert and Boskovic were their first collegiate wins.
Braun Simo had the fourth singles court win in a 6-3, 6-3 score before a rallying finish by Fok Kow at the #1 court. A tiebreak first set for Fok Kow was a 7-6 (7-3) score and he carried the momentum into set two with a big 6-2 win.
Edoardo Melindo had the final Moccasin win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The Mocs stay at home to host the University of Findlay on Sunday, Feb. 25, with a 2:00 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
