LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's tennis was just short of an upset in a 4-3 loss to NCAA Division I opponent the University of Buffalo Saturday morning at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Â
The Mocs (2-4, 1-3 SSC) lost the doubles point and rallied for three court wins to fall just short of the upset. The Bulls (8-2, 0-0 MAC) had a strong doubles showing for the early point and won three singles courts to outlast the Mocs 4-3.
Â
In doubles, the Bulls swept the Mocs with wins on all three courts, but not without a strong fight by FSC.
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren paired at the No. 1 court for some strong points but fell 6-2.
Jolie Miller and
Laia Pasini could not hold the Bulls at bay in a 6-4 loss and at No. 3,
Vivien Charvatova and
Beatriz Costa lost 6-3.
Â
Florida Southern had an early court loss at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-2 loss by Klaren, but
Olivia Bryant dominated the No. 4 spot with a 6-4, 6-4 win against her Buffalo opponent and first Moccasin point. UB won the next two courts to seal the match win, but FSC continued to battle at the first two courts. After losing the first set, Pasini rallied for a 7-6 (9-7) set two win and a 1-0 (10-7) third set tiebreak for the court win. Costa fed off the FSC win with her own rally to win the final two sets and third match point for the Mocs. Despite the loss, FSC had a great score against DI Buffalo.
Â
The Mocs will stay in Lakeland to host Washburn University on Monday, Feb. 26, set for a 3 p.m. start at Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
