LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's tennis was just short of an upset in a 4-3 loss to #9 Washburn University Monday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

The Mocs (2-5, 1-3 SSC) lost the doubles point and rallied for three court wins to fall short of the upset. The Ichabods (5-0, 0-0 MIAA) had a strong doubles showing for the early point and won three singles courts to outlast the Mocs 4-3.

The Mocs fought hard in doubles as the No.2 pairing of
Beatriz Costa and
Vivien Charvatova barely slipped away from the win, in a 6-4 loss. The No. 3 duo of
Jolie Miller and
Ronja Scheuermann dominated the court with a 6-0 win. In the No. 1 pairing, it was the same efforts as the No.2 pair as
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren were just short of clinching the first point falling to the #8 nationally ranked pair, 6-4.

Florida Southern had an early court win at No. 5 and 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win by Scheuermann on court 5, and #44
Olivia Bryant dominated the No. 3 spot with a 6-2, 6-4 win against her Ichabod opponent. Washburn won the next court, but FSC continued to battle as Costa defeated Lara Schmid 6-2, 6-4. #41 Pasini took down #3 Maja Jung with a 6-0 first set, but the ranked Ichabod won the next two sets, 6-3, 7-5 to tie the game 3-3. Â With a tie game, it all came down to Brown in the on the No. 6 court. Brown took set one 6-3, forcing it to three sets, just falling 6-1, 6-4 in the final set. Despite the loss, FSC had a great score against highly ranked Washburn.Â

The Mocs will stay in Lakeland to host Michigan Technological University on Thursday, Feb. 29, set for a 3 p.m. start at Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
