WINTER PARK, Fla. – A monster first inning lifted the Florida Southern College baseball team to a 13-1 win over Rollins College Friday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
Â
The Mocs (15-28, 9-16 SSC) scored 10 runs in the first inning for a team too far for Rollins to recover in the series-opening win. The Tars (22-20, 13-12 SSC) were held to four hits, the fewest since March 8 against Seton Hill (3), in the largest margin of victory this season for the Mocs.
Â
Florida Southern erupted with 10 runs in the first inning, the most in a single inning by the Mocs since February 24, 2018.
Jevin Relaford led off in the inning with a popup but the remainder of the lineup each tallied a hit with eight consecutive hits. FSC had RBI singles by
Lake Fisher, Nick Collins, Jack Duffy, and
Rohsean Riley, with a two RBI double by
Brady Doorey all before a second out was recorded. A two-RBI single by
Chris McKenna and a two-run homer by
El'Rico Riley brought home the 10
th run of the inning.
Â
Starting on the mound for the Moccasins,
Tanner Rollyson made his second start of the season in consecutive weekend series and retired his inning in three quick outs. Neither team scored in the second or third innings before both teams traded a solo homer with FSC's Collins and RC's Sparber home-run batters for an 11-1 FSC lead through four innings.
Â
Collins added a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning to take a 13-1 lead for the Mocs as Rollyson continued to keep Rollins to just one score. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game as
Wyatt Clark, Lucas Perez, and
Evan Mobley entered in relief of Rollyson to keep the Tars behind by 12 runs.
Â
Rollyson was credited with his fourth win of the season after going five innings, only giving up three hits and a solo run. Clark, Perez, and Mobley combined for no runs, only one hit, and no walks for the four innings of relief in an incredible starting and bullpen day for the Moccasins. At the plate, McKenna and Collins led with three hits with everyone in the lineup tallying a hit. Collins led FSC with four RBI on the day as four had 2+ RBI in the series opener. Edward Berry was handed the loss for the Tars, his fourth of the season.
Â
The Mocs will take the day off tomorrow for graduation and wrap up their series against the Tars on Sunday, May 5 with an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Alfond Stadium.
