SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team could not hold off a second-half comeback in a 2-2 tie against Saint Leo University on Sunday afternoon at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
Â
The Mocs (3-1-3, 0-0-2 SSC) had a two-goal lead early into the second half but were stifled from any further offensive attack by SLU. The Lions (4-1-2, 1-0-1 SSC) rallied with two unanswered goals to scrape a conference tie with both teams remaining undefeated in conference play.
Â
Another dominating offensive performance by the Moccasins with four shots to SLU's one during the first 45 minutes. In the first three minutes, FSC had a shot by
Rilee Hasegawa before trading possession time with Saint Leo for the next 10 minutes. The only shot of the first half for the Lions was a shot on goal by Elise McDonald, though Moccasin keeper
Carly Brodsky was there with the save.
Â
The first shot on goal by FSC was a great shot by
Alison Jenkins, though the SLU keeper saved that to keep a scoreless game. Mid-half substitutions brought fresh legs, including
Anita Vera, who was awarded a penalty kick in the first four minutes on the pitch. Vera converted the penalty to the right side for the 1-0 score, a lead kept into the half.
Â
One minute into the second half, Hasegawa scored for a two-goal Moccasin lead to the top right of the net with great passing by
Aubrey Wilkerson and Jenkins. Four minutes later, a good corner by the Lions led to a goal by Franziska Theus to cut the deficit to one.
Â
Jenkins nearly netted a goal in the offensive push after the restart, though there were no real opportunities for the next 20 minutes of play. In the 73
rd minute, a cross bounced off a Moccasin defender's head the wrong way, allowing the Lions to poke the ball into the net and tie the game to two goals.
Â
With 17 minutes left in the game, both teams traded ball possession with just a single shot by SLU as an attempt. Downpour rain affected the final 10 minutes of regulation that ended in a 2-2 tie for the Mocs, the first SSC tie for Saint Leo, as the final score.
Â
FSC held the advantage in shots, 8-to-4, with the SLU keeper snagging two saves to Brodsky's one. Hasegawa, Jenkins, and
Ally Prentice led the team with two shots each. Vera's PK conversion off the bench was her third goal of the year, with Hasegawa converting her first of the 2024 season. Ella Owen and Theus were the Lions' goal scorers in the conference tie.
Â
The Mocs will return to Lakeland to host Eckerd College after a lengthy road stand on Wednesday, Oct. 2, with a 7 p.m. start on Berend Field.
