COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Florida Southern College women's soccer team opened the Moccasin athletic year with a commanding 3-0 win over Georgia Southwestern State University at the campus of Columbus State on Thursday afternoon.
The Mocs (1-0) had a dominating second half, scoring all three goals, including two from Anita Vera. The Hurricanes (0-1) could not stop the offensive attack by FSC with only one shot on goal for GSW.
Graduate transfer Ashley Shimberg opened the game with a hot start after pushing down the field for a shot out wide in the first 15 seconds. Neither team had much action for the next 30 minutes until the first shot on goal by the Mocs came from Alison Jenkins in the 31st minute.
FSC continued the pressure in the last five minutes of the first half with two shots on goal, one each by Jasmin Adames and Liliana Jeffries. GSW managed one shot in the first half, though not near the keeper.
Adames started for the Mocs in the second half and quickly went to work with a goal in the first minute after an assist by Sierra Spirk. Spirk nearly scored a goal herself in the following minute, though GSW made the save for that shot.
Vera scored her first goal of the day in the 66th minute off a through pass by Jenkins and converted on a penalty kick three minutes later for her second goal and third for FSC. The Moccasins had two more shots on goal in the game compared to just one by the Canes as FSC won its opener 3-0.
Carly Brodsky made her Moccasin debut as the starting goalkeeper in the season's opening game. She had one save in her four shots faced as the offense stole the show with the 14-to-4 shot advantage. The FSC bench shined in game one, accounting for nine of the 14 shots, led by Spirk's four. Ellie Carrington led the Canes with three shots off the bench. Alana Beddow started for GSW and was handed the loss, facing nine shots on goal, with six saves.
The Mocs will wrap up their Georgia trip with a game against the week's host, No. 23 Columbus State University on Saturday, Sept. 7 for an 11 a.m. start at Walden Soccer Complex.
