LAKELAND, Fla. - Sophomore
Darcy Moffat makes his presence known for the Florida Southern College men's soccer team, scoring his third goal of the season to conclude the opening weekend with a 1-1 tie against West Alabama on Berend Field Sunday afternoon.
The Moccasins (1-0-1, 0-0 SSC) dominated the field, outshooting the Tigers (1-0-1, 0-0 GSC) 15 to 5 with seven of the 15 shots being on goal for FSC, while the UWA only had two on goal.
In goal,
Joe O'Shaughnessy had two saves playing the entire game, while the Mocs offense added pressure to the Tigers keeper, Dressel Timon who finished the game with six saves.
Wanting to continue the same momentum from Friday night, FSC quickly put pressure on West Alabama with back-to-back shots from senior
Ruben Linden and Moffat. In the 15th minute, a yellow card was given to UWA Aiden Riley and FSC
Nyles Lockridge allowing either team to take a free kick opportunity.
Moffat started to press on the Tigers defenders and took advantage of a missed handled header that went over the West Alabama's keeper to score on an empty net. With a 1-0 lead and the halftime break approaching, FSC fouled allowing UWA a free kick where the Tigers scrambled to tie the game scoring from a cross Michael Bell that was bobbled in the box and put in by David Nunez for his second goal of the year.
Despite not allowing a goal on either end, the second half went to the Mocs with seven shots, two saves, and three corners while the Tigers racked up eight fouls to end the day with 14 total.
The heat and fatigue started to play a role in the action, as both teams drew cards finishing the game with five yellow cards.
Offensively, Moffat led the way with six shots, followed by
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell with three,
Marcus Steele with two, and
Matthew Male,
Pablo Overfeld, and Linden with a shot apiece.
The Moccasins hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. where they compete against Christian Brothers on Friday, Sept. 13, and conclude the road trip with a neutral site game against Delta State on Sunday, Sept. 15. Kickoff against the Buccaneers is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. eastern on Signaigo Field.
