Florida Southern Finishes SSC Play With Solid Defensive Effort

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's soccer (7-2-6, 3-2-5 SSC) and Barry (5-3-9, 1-1-7 SSC) played to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at Buccaneer Field, the final Sunshine State Conference matchup of the regular season.

The Mocs finished their SSC schedule with a 3-2-5 overall record, eyeing a middle spot in the upcoming SSC tournament, beginning with quarterfinals on Nov. 10

The first half commenced with Florida Southern actively pressing against Barry's defense, highlighted by an early save from Barry's goalkeeper Marlen Hernandez on a shot by Bria Weldon at 2:41. Florida Southern continued to apply pressure, with Isabella Payne forcing another save and Madison Male testing the Barry goalkeeper, each effort narrowly missing the mark.

Despite the offensive efforts, Florida Southern was unable to capitalize on a series of corner kicks and shots, including attempts by Ellie Dossantos and Aliya Roberts that went off target. The half concluded with Florida Southern maintaining offensive momentum, but the match remained scoreless at halftime.

The second half began with defensive intensity from both teams, with Florida Southern pressing early. Alison Jenkins took a shot in the 55th minute, but it was saved by Barry's Hernandez. Defensively, Carly Brodsky made a crucial stop on a shot by Olivia Bradley, maintaining the deadlock.

Florida Southern continued to apply pressure as Male and Payne each registered shots, but Hernandez kept the game scoreless. Weldon and Frankie Gatien also tested Barry's defense late in the half, but their attempts were thwarted. The match remained scoreless as the half concluded, with both teams unable to break through.

Brodsky contributed to the team's defensive efforts by recording one save and securing a shutout in a full 90 minutes of play, her 10th shutout of the season. Payne made her presence felt with two shots, one of which was on target. Weldon matched her in attempts, also taking two shots, both of which were on goal.

Hernandez was in goal for Barry, recording six saves across two halves while securing a shutout. Bradley attempted one shot, which was on target, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Ronya Halleen also registered a shot, although it did not hit the target. Cordelia Brown added defensive support with an attempt on goal, though it was not on target.

In their next game, Florida Southern College will travel to face Edward Waters University on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. ET. The match will take place at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
