FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's soccer fell to Nova Southeastern University 1-0 on Thursday night at NSU Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium in the Sunshine State Conference Semifinal match.
The first half began with
Carly Brodsky in goal for Florida Southern, demonstrating early defensive resolve. Despite pressure from Nova Southeastern, Brodsky made a critical save on a shot by Sofia Suarez at the 14th minute. However, Nova Southeastern broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a goal from Maria Jansen, assisted by Ella Niemela.
Florida Southern looked to respond, with
Jasmin Adames attempting a shot that went wide in the 21st minute and
Ava Hackworth forcing a save from the Nova Southeastern goalkeeper, Gretchen Duttenhofer, just before halftime. The half concluded with Florida Southern trailing 1-0.
The second half kicked off with
Madison Male from Florida Southern quickly being involved as she committed a foul shortly after play resumed. Goalkeeper Brodsky made crucial saves against shots from Jianna Ramirez and Genesis Hernandez, keeping the visitors in the game. The Moccasins' defense held firm, preventing the Sharks from extending their lead.
Florida Southern's offensive efforts saw Male and
Ally Prentice with attempts, though they were unable to find the net.
Alison Jenkins came close with a shot on target, but it was saved by Duttenhofer. Despite several attempts late in the half, Florida Southern could not capitalize on their opportunities. The game concluded with Florida Southern falling to Nova Southeastern 1-0.
Brodsky made three saves while facing 10 shots, allowing only one goal in the match. Hackworth managed one shot on goal from her single attempt. Prentice contributed with two shots, one of which was on target.
Maria Jansen secured the win for the Sharks with the only goal of the match, assisted by Niemela. In goal, Duttenhofer made three saves over 90 minutes to hold the Mocs scoreless.Â
Florida Southern (9-3-6) will await its postseason fate with the NCAA women's soccer selection show on Monday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. Six teams in the South Region will get the call for the NCAA postseason first round, with automatic qualifiers from the SSC and Gulf South Conference champions and four at-large selections. FSC made the NCAA postseason back in 2022, going 1-1 in the NCAA first and second rounds. Overall, the Mocs are 1-2-2 over four appearances in the NCAA tournament. Â
