LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball rally fell short to even the series against the University of West Florida on Saturday afternoon at Henley Field.
Â
The Moccasins (1-1) gave up early runs after a scoreless start for the 10-7 loss in game two. The Argonauts (1-1) capitalized on FSC errors to have big innings halfway through the game and pull away from FSC.
Â
Florida Southern finished with 10 hits, led by
Mikey Scott, Noah Rabin, Rohsean Riley, and
Cory Filley, each with two hits on the day. Filley had three RBI on the day, a big base-clearing triple, with doubles by Scott and Rabin.
Brandon Jung got the start, and loss, for the Mocs, going four innings with four hits and two runs. He was relieved by
Logan Adams who struggled with some runs scored and followed by
BJ Rivera and
Aidan Kelley.
 Â
West Florida finished with 13 hits on the day, led by Brantley Willis with three hits and three RBI. Willis went on to serve as a reliever on the mound, pitching two innings, allowing only one hit and no runs. Jacob Heath got the win with six innings of work, five hits, and only one earned run. Willis joined Brett Rowell as home run hitters, the first hit deep this opening series.
Â
Another scoreless three innings to start the game before the Argos had back-to-back solo homers in the top of the fourth. After shutting out the Mocs in the bottom half, UWF responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, after a costly error with two outs cleared the bases.
Â
A hit by Riley in the bottom fifth later turned into an RBI single by Filley to send Riley home for the first FSC run. A runner was left on in that inning to only score one in the 5-1 game, as UWF extended the lead with another three runs in the sixth inning off a three-RBI double, 8-1.
Â
FSC didn't score in the sixth but rattled off five runs in the seventh inning after bases loaded and no outs led to a two-RBI triple by Filley. Thoroman had a groundout RBI, followed by an RBI single by Rabin to complete the five runs and 8-6 ballgame. Neither team scored in the eighth to bring out a game-deciding ninth inning.
Â
After two straight outs, a dropped flyout led to runners on, leading to another two runs by UWF for FSC to head into the bottom ninth down by four, 10-6. Scott had an RBI single that led to a single run, but that would end the game with a 10-7 loss to even the series.
Â
The Mocs will have their series finale of opening weekend against the Argos tomorrow, Feb. 2, with a 1 p.m. start at Henley Field.
