LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's tennis team opened Sunshine State Conference action on Tuesday afternoon as they rallied with the #15 Saint Leo University to a 4-3 loss at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The Moccasins open the season (0-1, 0-1 SSC) while the ranked Lions start the season (1-0, 1-0 SSC).
FSC fell in doubles losing the point after forcing a tiebreaker in the No.3 pair with
Jolie Miller and
Annika Berrendorf falling 7-6 (7-5). The No.2 doubles pair earned the win as
Ronja Scheuermann and
Emily Jennewein dominated the court 6-2.
In singles action, Scheuermann and Jennewein both earned individual wins as Scheuermann gave the Mocs its first point with a 6-0, 6-2 final on court three. On court five, Jennewein finished 7-5, 6-1 defeating her Saint Leo opponent and took a 2-1 lead for the Mocs.
The Lions won the next point as
Kennedi Brown fell at the #4 court, 6-1, 6-0 but Berrendorf captured the win from her SLU opponent winning 7-5, 6-1. With the FSC up 3-2, the second court was
Beatriz Costa and Luzia Obermeier fought until the end falling 7-5, 6-4.
With the Mocs and Lions tied up at 3-3, all eyes were on court #1 as
Olivia Bryant won the first set 6-3 but had to fight back to force a third set falling 6-1, 6-2 in three sets.
Florida Southern returns to action on February 22 as they hit the road for the first time this season traveling to take on Nova Southeastern. The first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
