WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern College softball team concluded the Sunshine State Conference series against Rollins on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 9-1 in five innings before another five-inning game, falling 8-0.
Freshman
Cam Nolte led the way for the Mocs (1-10, 0-3 SSC) going 2-for-3 on the day with the only run scored. The Tars (5-2, 3-0 SSC) had 17 hits on the day including four home runs, a triple, and three doubles.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 1, ROLLINS 9
Rollins continued the hot bats from the night before as they opened game of the doubleheader with a walk, that would around the bases scoring on an RBI double to left field to earn a 1-0 lead. A Moc error increased the Tars lead to 2-0, before Rollins got out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning.
Kelly Keating put the first hit on the board for FSC in the top of the second, but a Rollins double play closed the inning with no runs coming across for the Mocs.
In the bottom of the inning, the Tars added two more insurance runs scoring from a fielders sacrifice fly to make it 7-0. Florida Southern put runners in scoring position with back-to-back singles from
Morgan Roden and
Gabby Young but no runs came across in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, the eighth run came across home plate as a Moc error and RBI double added the unearned run to the board, 8-0. In the top of the fifth, Nolte lead off with a single down the left field line eventually scoring to put a run on the board for FSC.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rollins lead off with a single of their own that would move around the bases scoring on an RBI single to give the Tars a 9-1 win over the Mocs.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, ROLLINS 8
Game two was a slower start as runs didn't come on the board until the bottom of the second, as the Tars lead off with back-to-back singles that scored from a RBI triple to make it 2-0. A sacrifice bunt added another run on the board, before a homer ended the inning with a 4-0 lead for Rollins.
The Tars continued to add runs on the board, scoring two from a 2-run homer, and a solo shot to make it 7-0. Shelbie Valenica had the first hit of game two to lead off the top of fourth, but Valenica was left stranded at first.
Nolte lead off with a single of the middle in the top of the fifth, giving
Emma Lucchesi a chance to run moving all the way to third before getting stranded 90 feet from scoring. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tars concluded the game adding another the eight and final run scoring on homer over the left center fence to sweep the doubleheader and win the series, to open SSC action undefeated.
Florida Southern returns to Chris Bellotto Field on Friday, February 22 as they host Florida Tech to open the SSC series.
