LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 27 Florida Southern College men's tennis team notched a big 6-1 win over Division I opponent Rider University on Sunday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The Moccasins (9-4, 1-2 SSC) only lost one singles court en route to one of the few DI wins in program history. The Broncs (3-8) managed a singles court win at the #1 court but could not stop the Mocs in the loss.
In doubles, the No. 47 pairing of
Chris Fok Kow and
Mario Garoz beat Nathan Slattery and Dhruv Tangri by a 6-3 score.
Sam Frizelle and
George Russell then won 7-6 (7-5) against Cooper Dillon and Axel Engstrom to clinch the doubles point.
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert played out their court to a close 7-6 (8-6) loss to Matt Dahlin and Cole Thurgur.
For singles, Garoz was the first to win his court 6-2, 6-1 over Slattery, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win by Russell over Thurgur. Fok Kow joined in with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dahlin to secure the match win.
Edoardo Melindo outlasted Matthew Griscti at the #6 court to win in a tiebreak, followed by a 7-5 7-5 win from
Matthew Hewitt over Engstrom. The only court loss was a close match for No. 55 Frizell in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 loss to Tangri.
The Mocs will take on Fordham University on Tuesday, March 18, set for a 2 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
