LAKELAND, Fla. - The No.37 Florida Southern College women's tennis team hosted the University of Tampa for an afternoon match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center in Sunshine State Conference, winning the first conference match up 5-2.
The Moccasins (10-2, 1-2 SSC) earned the early point in doubles play against the Spartans (2-7, 0-4 SSC) winning all doubles pairings. FSC earned the first win at court No.2 with
Emily Jennewein and
Ronja Scheuermann winning 6-0.
Annika Berrendorf and
Jolie Miller, FSC's second doubles, won at court three solidifying the Mocs doubles point winning 6-3. At the top doubles court,
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren finished a complete sweep defeating their Spartans opponent 7-5 to take an early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, No. 25
Olivia Bryant earned the early win at the top spot as FSC made it 2-0 with a win due to retirement. Jennewein defeated Linn Eriksson Sundling at No.5 singles slot winning both sets 6-3 to improve the Mocs to 3-0.
Looking to capture the first conference win, Florida Southern's Klaren won in the No.6 singles taking down Alexandra Chebli 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the Mocs win and make it 4-0.
Beatriz Costa dropped her match falling after a hard-fought set one 7-5, to a 6-0 final set to make it 4-1.
The final two courts rallied forcing an extra set as No.3 singles, Scheuermann won in a tiebreaker in set one 7-6 (7-3), fell in set two 6-4, but won the last set. The final court also forced an extra set as Berrendorf rallied falling in set one 7-5, to come back in set two 6-3, Berrendorf fought till the end falling in the last set 1-0 (10-6).
Florida Southern returns to action tomorrow, March 22 as they host another SSC match in Palm Beach Atlantic. The first serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
