LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team fell in the final non-conference game in a midweek doubleheader to the University of West Florida. The Moccasins dropped game one of the twinbill 9-0 in five innings, before in game two 3-0 on Chris Bellotto Field.
The Moccasins (7-26) were led by
Kate Mikle on the day going 2-for-5 in both games combined. The Argonauts (23-8) had several with multiple hits as G. Guerriero had two hits in both games while Emma Brice went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, WEST FLORIDA 9
Both West Florida and Florida Southern had hits to open the first inning, but it was the second inning where the Argos took a 2-0 lead, scoring on a two-out triple.
In the top of the third, West Florida increased its lead to 6-0 scoring two runs before the Mocs could force the first out. The next two runs came from a passed ball and a triple.
In the top of the fifth, the Argos pushed three more runs across home plate scoring from back-to-back singles to make it 9-0.
Kayla Hickey (3-6) got the nod in the circle pitching a complete game allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two. The Mocs had four hits in the game coming from Mikle,
Keira Morris,
Jadyn Bushnell, and
Emma Lucchesi.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, WEST FLORIDA 3
A game that was scoreless until the fourth, opened with the Mocs putting the first hit on the board as Mikle led off with a single up the middle. The Argos responded with the same leadoff single but the game remained scoreless.
In the top of the fourth, West Florida put the first run on the board leading off with back-to-back singles to get runners in scoring position. A double steal moved the runners as an RBI single put the Argos up 1-0.
In the top of the sixth, Emma Brice led off with her third consecutive hit to get on and was brought home after Jessie Baughan hit a two-run homer over the left-center fence to make it 3-0. The Mocs looked for an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh but the Argos earned the sweep with a shutout.
Florida Southern returns to Sunshine State Conference action this weekend as they travel to the University of Tampa where they take on the Spartans in a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:00 p.m.
