#6 Mocs Split Doubleheader to #25 Eagles to Wrap Up Series

Mocs dominated game one of the day 16-5 before losing the series with a 3-1 final game loss

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The No. 6 Florida Southern College baseball team lost its series against No. 25 Carson-Newman University in a split doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

The Moccasins (16-4, 5-1 SSC) had a big game one of the day with a 16-5 win over the Eagles but lost the series finale by a 3-1 score in seven innings. The Eagles (16-5, 7-2 SAC) could not stop early runs in game one, eventually run-ruled in the eighth inning, before holding off the Mocs in the finale to win the series.

GAME 1: FLORIDA SOUTHERN 16, CARSON-NEWMAN 5
The Mocs climbed to an early 13-0 lead by the third inning of game one. Highlighted by home runs by Grant Thoroman and Mikey Scott, the Mocs tallied over 13 hits in that span, finishing with 21 hits, a new season-high. The 16 runs also topped a new season-best, despite not playing a ninth inning. The Eagles cut into the FSC lead with four runs in the third inning, 13-4, eventually holding the Mocs to four-straight scoreless innings. However, CNU only managed one more run to get five on the game during the same span. In the eighth inning, Wyatt Campbell had a two-run homer, and Thoroman had an RBI single to bring the score to a 16-5 lead, one the Eagles could not add runs to in the bottom of the eighth in the called game. Brandon Jung got his third win of the season off six innings of work and four strikeouts. He was relieved by Tanner Rollyson, who only gave up one hit and one earned run over two innings to end the game.

GAME 2: FLORIDA SOUTHERN 1, CARSON-NEWMAN 3
A very different start to the series finale, with FSC not scoring until the sixth inning in the low-scoring game. Neither team scored in the first two innings before an RBI single in the third by CNU had the first run scored. A two-run homer in the following inning made it a 3-0 Carson-Newman lead, and only an RBI single by Rohsean Riley in the sixth scored a run. The Mocs were held to five hits and five left on base. Jordan Fox had the start and went three innings, later being relieved by Evan Mobley for the final three innings.

The Mocs will resume conference play with a series against Eckerd College next weekend, March 14-15 at the Turley Athletic Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla.
