Softball Falls to Eagles in Saturday Doubleheader

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Southern College softball team dropped its Sunshine State Conference doubleheader to Embry-Riddle on Saturday afternoon after a weather delay to postponed the game in Daytona. FSC fell 9-0 in five innings in game one and rallied back late in game two for a 5-2 final in game two.

The Moccasins (4-20, 1-11 SSC) had three hits in game one coming from led off Kate Mikle, Shelby Savitt in the three hole, and pinch hitter Cat Buckner. In game two, Mikle and Shelbie Valencia both went 2-for-4 from the plate with Mikle bringing in a run and hitting a double.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, EMBRY-RIDDLE 9
FSC opened the top of the first with a two-out double from Savitt, being the first to put a hit on the board between either team. However in the bottom of the inning, ERAU hit a one out double that moved around the bases eventually scoring after loading the bases with an 2RBI single to center field to start the scoring, 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, another one out single put Embry-Riddle on the bases and moving around the bases into scoring position from a Moc error, and a walk before scoring on a fielder's choice and make it 3-0. With still just one out for the Eagles, an RBI single scored another run for ERAU but two more runs came in due to bases loaded walks to make it 6-0. The final run of the inning came in due to another Moc error as the Eagles took an early 7-0 lead.

Back-to-back led off singles quickly put Embry-Riddle into scoring position to open the bottom of the fourth as both runners crossed home plate from an RBI double to right center field and increased the score to 9-0, where it would stay to close out game one.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, EMBRY-RIDDLE 5
The Eagles continued their hitting from game one scoring early in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to make it, 1-0. The first hit for the Mocs came in the top of the second with Valencia singling through the right side but was left stranded in scoring position to keep FSC scoreless.

In the bottom of the second, ERAU led off with a single and scored on a fielders choice to double the Eagles score to 2-0. Another Embry-Riddle single brought in two runners to double the score again before finishing out the inning with a 5-0 led after a sacrifice bunt scored another run for the Eagles.

It was quiet on both sides, until the top of the fifth with Florida Southern put the first run of the day on the board with an RBI single from Mikle to score Bushnell who singled up the middle for a hit to led off, 5-1.

With one last opportunity, FSC scored another run in the top of the seventh after Jenna Meder walked and moved 90 feet from home off an Mikle double but scored from a wild pitch to conclude the game with a 5-2 final.

Florida Southern returns home to Chris Bellotto field for a week full of softball as they host seven games in five days starting on Tuesday, March 11. Mocs host Southwest Minnesota to open the fun filled week with a 5 p.m. first pitch.
