WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team traveled down to West Palm Beach to take on Palm Beach Atlantic University in Sunshine State Conference action as the series opener went to the Sailfish 8-2 at Simpson Field on Friday evening.
The Moccasins (7-33, 2-20 SSC) were led by
Shelby Savitt hitting her first collegiate home run, while going 1-for-3 with two runners batted in and a run scored.
Florida Southern put the first two hits on the board as back-to-back one out single put the Mocs into scoring position early with singles from
Emma Lucchesi and
Kate Mikle.
The Sailfish broke its silence at the bottom of the second as a one-out double put PBA into scoring position for the first time. With two-outs, Palm Beach Atlantic hit a RBI single, scoring the runner at second to take a 1-0 lead.
PBA kept the momentum, scoring two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles to earn a 3-0 lead after three complete innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, the Sailfish doubled its lead to 6-0 scoring from a bases loaded ground out and a 2-RBI double to make it 6-0.
The Mocs put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth as Savitt hit a two-run homer to cut the Sailfish lead down to 6-2 with just one more inning left to play. PBA jumped back out to a six-run lead as a Moc error and a bases loaded walk allowed the Sailfish to lead 8-2 with both runs unearned.
With one more opportunity, pinch hitter
Cam Nolte came in and singled to right field, but it was all the Mocs could manage as the series opener went to the Sailfish 8-2 on Friday night.
Florida Southern returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Sailfish in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
