LAKELAND, Fla. - Thursday afternoon, the Florida Southern College Softball team fell to Lynn University in the first Sunshine State Conference three-game series game.
Going into the match-up, the Moccasins (8-35, 3-22 SSC) stood at 10th in the conference, and the Fighting Knights at ninth (18-24, 4-18 SSC). The Moccasins were led offensively by
Kate Mikle who went 2-for-3 while Aiyana Hicks led for the Fighting Knights going 4-for-4.
Gabby Young brought in the first run for the moccasins in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI by
Shelby Savitt. Young's run tied the score, 1-1. The second inning remained scoreless on both sides with freshman Des Aitkin on the mound, able to hold Lynn. Lynn was able to score 1 in the 3rd on an RBI to left by Hicks 2-1.
The Fighting Knights came out strong again in the top of the fifth inning, where Hicks had an in the park home run and Lynn was able to bring in four total runs, extending the lead 6-2.
Emma Lucchesi walked home in the fifth, scoring 6-2. Amanda Liberman, who entered as a relief pitcher for Aitkin in the fifth, kept Lynn scoreless in the top of the sixth.
The Moccasins continued their response with the bats in the bottom of the sixth with hits from
Kelsey Kadlub and
Kate Mikle, allowing
Cam Nolte and
Morgan Roden to score, chipping away at Lynn's lead, bringing the score to 6-4.
Lynn was able to add one more insurance run to their lead before the game concluded, with Kyra Sunga scored on Hicks' RBI. The Moccasins were unable to come back during their final ups, leaving the score 7-4.
Florida Southern returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Lynn on Chris Bellotto Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
