FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida Southern College baseball team lost its series opener against Nova Southeastern University in extra innings with a 10-9 loss on Friday night at the NSU Baseball Complex.
The Moccasins (30-12, 14-8 SSC) were outhit 17-to-6 by NSU, though still managing some big plays to stay in contention. The Sharks (22-16, 14-8) outlasted the Mocs in the lengthy Friday night game, hitting a bases-loaded walk-off in the bottom of the 10
th to win 10-9.
Florida Southern was first to strike with a solo run in the top of the first inning, an RBI groundout by
Grant Thoroman. Neither team scored in the second inning, with the Sharks taking the lead in the third on an RBI single and grand slam for a 5-1 NSU lead. The Mocs eventually took the lead with three straight innings of scoring, starting with three runs in the fifth inning. An RBI groundout by
Mikey Scott, a wild pitch, and a two-RBI single by Thoroman brought FSC within one run in the fifth, taking the lead in the sixth on a three-run homer by
Brady Doorey, his first collegiate homer, for a 7-5 game. The Mocs then extended their lead to four runs in the seventh with RBI singles by
Ahmad Fitts and
Wyatt Campbell, 9-5.
Nova Southeastern didn't take long to respond, tying the game at the bottom of the seventh with four runs scored, 9-9. The pitching settled in over the final innings, sending the game into extras after a scoreless eighth and ninth inning. NSU opened the bottom of the 10
th inning with three straight singles, eventually leading to the walk-off single by the Sharks to win the game 10-9. The loss went to FSC's
Robert Tracy III, having a strong two innings before being stretched in extras. The win was credited to NSU's Alicea.
The Mocs will wrap up their final regular season road series of 2025 tomorrow, April 26, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
