FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida Southern College baseball swept today's doubleheader to win the series against Nova Southeastern University on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex.
The Moccasins (32-12, 16-8 SSC) won the first game of the day by a 7-5 score and erupted in the final innings of game two to maintain the lead for an 8-2 win. The Sharks (22-18, 14-10 SSC) were outhit by the Mocs 9-to-3 in the first game of the day, though plagued by errors (5).
GAME 1: FLORIDA SOUTHERN 7, NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 5
The Mocs started the first inning with two runs on an RBI single by
Rohsean Riley and a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. The Sharks quickly added a solo homer in the bottom half of the first, later tying the game in the fourth on a wild pitch after two scoreless innings by both teams. The game remained 2-2 with no runs scored in the fifth and sixth inning, before a big seventh inning by FSC with three runs.
Grant Thoroman had a two-RBI single to send
Mikey Scott and
Jevin Relaford home, followed by an RBI single by
Noah Rabin for a 5-2 game.
NSU cut the FSC lead to one run after an RBI single and a groundout score led to a 5-4 game into the final frame. The Mocs added an RBI double by Rabin and a wild pitch scored
Adrian Davis to make a three-run lead, 7-4, just outside the reach of the Sharks, who only managed one run, 7-5.
Jordan Fox was credited with the win, his third of the year, after six innings of work with five strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Tanner Rollyson entered in the ninth, striking out two to earn the save.
GAME 2: FLORIDA SOUTHERN 8, NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 2
The Mocs had another good start to the game, with two runs in the first off RBI singles by Thoroman and Rabin. FSC then went cold over the next six innings, held scoreless by NSU until the eighth. Nova had a single run in the second inning, but they too were scoreless for five innings with both pitchers limiting base running. The Mocs had a big eighth inning with four runs scored on wild pitches and RBI singles by
Wyatt Campbell and
Chris McKenna, for a 6-1 lead.
NSU had an RBI single in the eighth, but that was the final scoring for the Sharks. In the ninth inning, the Mocs extended the lead to six runs with a sac fly by Thoroman and an RBI single by Riley, enough for the 8-2 win.
Wyatt Clark held the Sharks scoreless over the final two innings, allowing just three hits and two strikeouts with no walks.
Logan Adams was credited with the win, his fourth of the season.
The Mocs will return home for the remaining two weeks of the regular season, starting with a series against Embry-Riddle May 1-2 at Henley Field.
