LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team dropped the series opener against No. 20 Nova Southeastern University in Sunshine State Conference action on Friday evening.
Prior to the game, Florida Southern's
Al Green threw out the honorary first pitch as he will be retiring from FSC this summer. Since 2007, Green has been a cornerstone for the FSC community, he is a mentor, a leader, a friend, and a Mocs legend. Al brought heart, humor, and humility into everything he did. After 17 incredible years of service and dedication, Al is stepping into a well-earned retirement. Al deserves this recognition after all he has done for our students, the FSC programs, and the Florida Southern family.
The Moccasins (8-38, 3-25 SSC) had three hits on the night while the Sharks (33-14, 16-9 SSC) had nine hits.
Gabby Young got the first hit on the board for either team with a lead off single up the middle in the bottom of the first. Nova Southeastern answered back with a lead off single of their own in the following inning, capitalizing off the single to score from a sacrifice fly and take an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second,
Cat Buckner hit a two out single to center field for the Mocs second hit but was left stranded. The next two innings were silent for both teams as the Mocs and Sharks headed into the fifth where Nova Southeastern took a 7-0 lead.
Morgan Roden hit a two out single through the left side for FSC's final hit as she was stranded at first as well. In the top of the sixth, the Sharks tacked on three more runs with two of the three coming in from a two out walk and an RBI single to make it 10-0 and take game one of the series.
