Scheuermann Clinches 4-3 Upset Over #5 Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Ronja Scheuermann clinched the 4-3 win for the No.34 Florida Southern College women's tennis team as they upset the host No.5 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex in Sunshine State Conference action. 
 
The Moccasins (13-4, 4-4 SSC) gave the Eagles 18-3, 6-1 SSC) its first loss as they earned the early point in doubles play winning two of the three doubles matches. As the top doubles spot of Kelly Klaren and Kennedi Brown defeated No.20 Carla Cabero del Hierro and Laura Cuesta Bret 6-1. They finalized the early point and made it 1-0 in favor of FSC. The #2 pairs of Emily Jennewein and Scheuermann defeated Maissane Aik and Benedetta Sensi 6-1 that sealed the early point win.
 
In singles action, ERAU tied the match 1-1 winning the #2 singles spot with Beatriz Costa falling to No.17 Jessica Wira Hadipoe, 6-2, 6-0. Kelly Klaren gave FSC a 2-1 lead as she took care of business in the #6 singles spot defeating her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The Eagles tied it once against with #5 singles win before No. 11 Olivia Bryant defeated No. 53 Cuesta Bret 6-4, 6-2 to take a 3-2 lead. 
 
Annika Berrendorf forced a third set at the #4 singles court, falling in the first set 6-3 before bouncing back to win set two 6-3. With the game on the line, Embry-Riddle won set three 6-1 to put all the pressure on the #3 singles matches. 
 
With Scheuermann and Benedetta tied with one win a piece it came down to the set three. Scheuermann rallied on the serve and let the ball go out of bounce to capture the final set point and upset the top five team in the nation winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. 
 
Florida Southern returns to action this weekend, traveling to face non-conference competition as they take on Valdosta State and West Florida up in Georgia. The first serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on April 12.
