LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 10 Florida Southern College baseball team had a big day with two wins against Rollins College on Friday afternoon at Henley Field.
The Moccasins (36-13, 20-9 SSC) finished yesterday's halted game with a 10-2 victory over the Tars (29-19, 18-11 SSC) before a 12-4 win in the second game of the series.
The day opened with a wrap-up of the halted game from yesterday, with the Mocs leading 10-1 in the top of the ninth and no outs.
Colby Rice handled the final three outs to secure the win, allowing one run, for 10-2 FSC final.
Florida Southern carried the momentum into the next game, exploding with five runs scored in the first inning.
Mikey Scott started with an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI double by
Rohsean Riley, RBI by
Ahmad Fitts, and an RBI single from
Wyatt Campbell. The Tars were not able to score in the second but had a bases-loaded walk to score one in the third inning, 5-1. After a scoreless fourth inning, Rollins came within one run after a three-run homer by Mason Wilson.
The close game was short-lived as the Mocs scored four in the bottom half of the fifth inning off RBI hits by
Grant Thoroman and
Noah Rabin. The next two runs were scored on a two-run homer by Fitts, his 13
th of the season, for a 9-4 lead. The Mocs pitching staff continued to hold off a Rollins comeback, adding another three runs in the sixth inning on a double steal, RBI by Fitts, and RBI by Campbell. The Tars could not recover and FSC continued to pitch well for the 12-4 final, securing a series win.
Jordan Fox had the start for the Mocs, earning his fourth win of the season on five innings of work. The next four relievers for the Mocs held Rollins scoreless with only two hits and only one walk combined during that time. The first reliever for FSC was
Ethan Breslin, who went two innings of scoreless work.
Brandon Jung handled the eighth inning with three straight flyouts.
Austen Kessler started the ninth inning, going two-thirds in two straight outs, followed by
David Butz to secure the final out on an athletic groundout grab and throw by
Jevin Relaford.
The Mocs will wrap up the series with a game tomorrow, May 10, set for a 12 p.m. first pitch at Henley Field. A Senior Day ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m., prior to the final game.
