BOCA RATON, Fla. — In the 36th meeting between Florida Southern College men's soccer (3-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC) and No. 1 Lynn University (5-0-0, 1-0-0 SSC) it was the reigning national champions that secured a decisive 3-0 victory at Bobby Campbell Stadium on Saturday, with three different players each contributing a goal.
The first half started with both teams feeling each other out, but Lynn managed to pull ahead in the 34th minute when Dominik N'gatie scored, assisted by Martijn Smith and Thiago De Carvalho. Florida Southern's keeper,
Lasse Dettmer was tested early but managed to keep the Fighting Knights' attempts from increasing the deficit.
Dylan Lowther and
Daniel Shabani both registered shots for the Moccasins, with Shabani's effort being saved by Lynn's goalkeeper, Luca Clavero, as the visitors looked to level the score before the break.
The second half began with a penalty kick goal by Lynn's Luan Barroso Rennstich in the 48th minute, setting the tone early. Despite a series of offensive attempts from the Moccasins, including shots by
Tim Baierlein and
Hector Oliver, they were unable to convert, with Clavero making crucial saves. Martijn Smith extended the Fighting Knights' lead in the 72nd minute with a goal assisted by Barroso Rennstich, sealing a 3-0 result by the end of the match.
Dettmer, playing as goalkeeper, recorded one save against ten shots faced in his 90 minutes on the field. Shabani was active offensively, managing one shot on goal.
Darcy Moffat contributed with two shots, one of which was on target. Baierlein also added a shot on goal to his tally.
Clavero stood out for the Fighting Knights with a shutout, making five saves against nine shots faced over 90 minutes. Smith contributed both a goal and an assist, scoring on his only shot of the match. Barroso Rennstich mirrored Smith's performance with a goal and an assist, converting his single shot on goal. N'gatie's goal proved to be the game-winner, capitalizing on one of his two shots. Additionally, De Carvalho provided a key assist in the contest.
Looking ahead, the Mocs will travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to face Saint Leo University. The matchup is set for September 24 at 7 p.m. at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
