Mocs Secure Road Win with Late Goal Against the Cardinals

WHEELING, W.V. — The Florida Southern College women's soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 SSC) won its first game of the 2025 season with a 1-0 victory over Wheeling University (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MEC) on Saturday at Bishop Schmitt Field, with the lone goal coming in the second half.

The first half commenced with a strong defensive showing from both teams, resulting in a scoreless half. FSC's Carly Brodsky made a crucial save in the 44th minute, denying the Cardinals' Caryn Goins from close range. On the offensive end, Alison Jenkins and Isabella Payne each tested Wheeling's goalkeeper, Sam Faulkner, with shots in the 27th and 36th minutes respectively, but Faulkner held firm to keep the match level at halftime.

The second half unfolded with tension as both teams grappled for control, but it was Jasmin Adames who broke the deadlock with a decisive goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by Bria Weldon. Florida Southern maintained defensive composure, with Brodsky making a crucial save on a shot by Nyah Smith in the 66th minute to keep the Cardinals scoreless. Despite multiple fouls disrupting the flow, the Moccasins' resilience paid off, securing a 1-0 victory on the road.

Adames scored the only goal of the match, marking the game-winner for the Moccasins. Weldon contributed to the victory with an assist on Adames' goal. Brodsky recorded a shutout, making two saves across 90 minutes to secure the win, the program's first matchup against the Cardinals.

Faulkner played a big role for the Cardinals, recording four saves over 90 minutes. Despite the team's 1-0 loss, she faced 10 shots, conceding just one goal. Goins and Smith each contributed offensively with one shot on goal apiece. Rosie Caley led the team in total shots with two, although none were on target.

Looking ahead, the Moccasins prepare to host No. 2 Columbus State University on September 12. The match is set for 7 p.m. at Berend Field in Lakeland, Fla., the first home game of the season for FSC.
