LAKELAND, Fla. — The Florida Southern College women's soccer team (2-0-1, 0-0-0) secured a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Columbus State (1-2-0, 0-0-0) in its home opener Friday night at Berend Field.
The first half commenced with an intense defensive display from the Mocs, highlighted by
Carly Brodsky's crucial save at 12:31. Despite multiple fouls, the breakthrough came at 23:45 when
Breena Harrigan found the back of the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead over Columbus State. The eventual game-winner was the second goal for Harrigan this season. As the half progressed, Brodsky continued to be instrumental with another save at 30:46, preserving the narrow advantage into the break.
The second half began with a defensive showcase from the Moccasins, as goalkeeper Brodsky made crucial saves against a persistent Columbus State offense. Notably, Brodsky denied a strong shot from Michelle Medina in the 50th minute and another attempt by Mia Robinson in the 80th minute. Despite the pressure, the defense held firm, maintaining the 1-0 lead established in the first half, while
Jasmin Adames contributed offensively with a shot on goal in the 48th minute.
Brodsky recorded seven saves to secure a shutout victory for Florida Southern, facing 20 shots in the match, for her second shutout of the season. Harrigan scored the only goal, which was also the game-winning goal, on her single shot attempt. Adames led the offensive efforts with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Tonight's win was the first program win against Columbus State in five matches played. This was also the first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 25 Embry-Riddle last season.
Heidi Harris was in goal for Columbus State, recording three saves against six shots faced. Kendal Coreil was a key offensive contributor, leading the team with five shots and placing two on target. Robinson also made her presence felt with four shots, two of which were on goal.
In their next game, the Moccasins will host Georgia College and State University on September 14. The match is set for an 11 a.m. kickoff at Berend Field.
