LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 14 Florida Southern (1-1, 1-0 SSC) defeated Lynn University (2-1, 0-1 SSC) with a decisive 6-1 victory on Saturday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Mocs swept all three doubles matches and secured five out of six singles points.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point with victories on all three courts.
Mario Garoz and
Edoardo Melindo defeated Daniel Azar and Lennart Ostheimer 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, while
George Russell and
Onur Turgut followed with a 6-3 win over Aymen Aimoussa and Santino Morel at No. 1 doubles.
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert clinched with a 7-6(4) victory against Davide Cortimiglia and Louay Makke at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play,
Mario Antonio Morales gave the Moccasins an early lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Rila at No. 6 singles. The Fighting Knights responded at No. 2 singles as Aymen Aimoussa defeated
Matthew Hewitt 6-2, 6-3. Florida Southern's Boskovic then added a point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Cortimiglia at No. 5 singles.
Marco Cinotti extended the Mocs' lead with a three-set triumph over Ostheimer, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Garoz clinched the overall match on court one, defeating Makke 7-5, 6-3. In the final match of the day, Turgut won a thrilling three-setter against Morel. He fell behind in the first set in tiebreak 7-6(7-3), before forcing a third set with a 7-5 set-two victory. He clinched the win with a 12-10 victory at No. 3 singles.
The next challenge for Florida Southern College is a home match against Valdosta State University on Monday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center in Lakeland, Florida.
