LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 14 Florida Southern College men's tennis (2-1) upset No. 2 Valdosta State University (1-2) 4-3 on Monday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point with wins on courts No. 2 and No. 1.
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert quickly put Florida Southern on the board with a 6-2 victory over Wilson Igbinovia and Jan Thissen at No. 2 doubles.
George Russell and
Onur Turgut followed suit, clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 finish against Philipp Bosse and Pietro Casciola at No. 1 doubles. The match at No. 3 doubles, featuring
Edoardo Melindo and
Hunter Nussbaum against Emile Delporte and Julien Doitteau, was left unfinished with a score of 3-5.
In singles play, Florida Southern and Valdosta State each claimed three wins. Boskovic extended the home team's lead with a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles, defeating Delporte 6-3, 6-4. Valdosta State responded with Doitteau defeating Russell 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Bosse further narrowed the margin for the visitors with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) victory at No. 2 singles against
Matthew Hewitt. The visitors continued their comeback when Thissen edged
Marco Cinotti at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 0-6, 7-6(7) result. Turgut tied the team scores with a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Igbinovia at No. 3 singles, securing a split in singles play.
Mario Antonio Morales was the final court and added the winning point for Florida Southern at No. 6 singles, overcoming Casciola 6-3, 6-0, to complete the upset.
