ORLANDO, Fla. -
Florida Southern College had three Moccasins represented in the Sunshine State Conference weekly awards, with Donte Groppso as the Men's Golfer of the Week,
Sydney Gomes as the Women's Basketball Player of the Week, and
Amare Miller as the Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Donte Groppuso took the individual title to open the spring season for the then #5-ranked Moccasins. Groppuso (then ranked #42) finished the tournament at an astonishing 13-under. On day one, Groppuso was tied with West Florida's Per Ekelund for the field lead, shooting 10-under through the two rounds. The graduate student carded eight birdies in round one (finishing the round 6-under), and four birdies in round two. Groppuso's first round of 66 was a career-low. In the final round, Groppuso maintained his momentum in round three, shooting 3-under on the day. An early eagle on hole two set the tone for Groppuso to pull away from Per Ekelund (West Florida) for the field lead. Groppuso shot four more birdies on the day to finish the round with a score of 69. His three-round score of 203 was a career low. Groppuso led the Mocs to a runner-up finish behind then #4 West Florida.
After the tournament, Groppuso is ranked #1 in Division II in the Scoreboard by Clippd rankings, while Florida Southern moved #4.
Sydney Gomes delivered a dominant week to lead Florida Southern, highlighted by a career-best 32-point performance that powered the Mocs to their first win over Eckerd since 2022. The senior shot an efficient 12-of-17 from the field — including three makes from beyond the arc — while adding five assists and eight rebounds in a complete all-around effort. The 32 points marked the highest scoring output of her career, surpassing her previous mark of 31 set earlier this season against UAH Chargers during the GSC/SSC Crossover.
Gomes followed that performance with another strong outing to close the week, recording 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting against the Embry-Riddle Eagles. Despite a tough matchup, she continued to anchor the offense and compete through the final whistle, capping a standout week that showcased her scoring ability, efficiency, and leadership. On the season, Gomes has been named SSC Player of the Week three times (four weekly honors total), and her fifth weekly honor of her career.
Amare Miller led the Mocs on both sides of the ball in their 2-0 week in SSC Play. In the Mocs 106-81 victory over Eckerd, Miller posted 24 points and seven rebounds. He added two assists, two blocks, and two steals in the game. In the Mocs 87-82 victory over Embry-Riddle, Miller recorded his ninth double-double of the season in the Saturday matinee matchup with Embry-Riddle, with 25 points and 11 rebounds. He averaged 24.5 points per game, shooting 62.9% on the week. Defensively, Miller picked up three blocks and three steals on the week while averaging 9.0 rebounds per game.
