WINTER PARK, Fla. — Florida Southern College baseball (4-9, 0-1 SSC) faced a tough defeat against Rollins College (7-4, 1-0 SSC) with a final score of 9-5 on Friday at Alfond Stadium.
The Moccasins got off to a strong start in the first inning with
Eric Harrison Jr.'s single and
Carson Brady's double.
Cory Filley came through with a single to center, driving in two runs and putting Florida Southern ahead. However, Rollins answered back with a solo homer by J. Rubin and a three-run shot from M. Matteo, giving the Tars a 4-2 lead at the end of the inning.
In the fifth,
Mikey Scott launched a solo home run to right field, narrowing the gap to 5-3. Rollins added another run in the sixth without a hit, making it 6-3.
Brady delivered again in the eighth with a home run, bringing Florida Southern closer at 6-4. The Tars responded with three more runs, highlighted by an RBI double from C. Hughes, pushing their lead to 9-4.
Gavin Smith smashed a solo homer to right field in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough to bridge the gap. The game concluded with Rollins on top, 9-5.
Scott made his mark with a home run, one RBI, and one run scored. Harrison Jr. contributed two hits, including a double, and scored once. Brady rounded out his performance with two runs, two hits, including a home run, and one RBI. Smith was solid at the plate, hitting a home run, driving in one, and scoring once.
Sachem Ramos pitched 5 1/3 innings, while striking out three and walking one in the loss.
Heath Clevenger, Evan Parmer and
Ethan Breslin combined for the final innings of work in relief.
Looking ahead, Florida Southern will meet the Tars again with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Alfond Stadium at Harper-Shepherd Field in Winter Park, Florida.
