Florida Southern Opens Spring Break Trip With 5-2 Victory

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Florida Southern women's tennis (2-2) defeated Saint Francis University (5-7) 5-2 on Sunday to open the annual spring break trip to Hilton Head. The Moccasins secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and clinched the match with four singles wins.

Florida Southern claimed the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Kennedi Brown and Josie Holderbach secured a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Dasha Chichkina and Helena Lynn. Emily Jennewein and Ronja Scheuermann followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles against Gabriella Almanza and Kelly Dowuona. Saint Francis University managed a win at No. 3 doubles, where Sophia Cunningham and Emma Marais defeated Annika Berrendorf and Jolie Miller, 7-5.

In singles, Florida Southern extended its lead with a dominant performance from Diana Volkov at No. 6 singles, defeating Morgan Tuffs 6-2, 6-3. Scheuermann added another point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dowuona at No. 2 singles. Berrendorf contributed to the total with a 6-0, 7-5 victory against Almanza at No. 3 singles. The match was clinched by Miller, who secured a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(10-6) win at No. 5 singles over Reagen Mangan.

Saint Francis University's Lynn and Chichkina picked up wins to narrow the gap. Lynn defeated Jennewein in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-6), at No. 4 singles. Chichkina overcame Holderbach in another three-set match on court one, 4-6, 7-6(7-3), 1-0(10-8). Despite these efforts, Florida Southern secured a 4-2 victory.

Berrendorf posted a 1-0 record in singles play at No. 3, while Miller recorded a win at No. 5 singles, both achieving a 1-0 result. Brown teamed up with Holderbach to collect a victory in No. 1 doubles, contributing to a 1-0 outcome. Scheuermann added a 1-0 score at No. 2 singles and secured a doubles win at No. 2 with Jennewein.

The next challenge for the Moccasins is a match against Tiffin University (Ohio) on Monday, March 2 at 3 p.m. in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
