LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 9 Florida Southern College men's tennis (10-3) defeated Tuskegee University (6-7) 5-0 on Friday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions and swept four singles matches.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and three.
George Russell and
Onur Turgut opened with a 7-5 win over Tyler Ladge and Thompson Thomu at No. 1 doubles. The deciding point came when
Hunter Nussbaum and
Jacob Stahlgren Schmidt clinched the win on court three with a 7-6(7-5) victory against Shane Tapera and Emmanuel Wetty. Tuskegee's Miles Wilson and Kevin Wright captured a win at No. 2 doubles, edging out #41
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert 7-6(7-4).
In singles play, Florida Southern maintained its momentum, starting with #16
Mario Garoz's 3-1, 96-0 victory over Thompson Thomu at No. 2 singles, a match that had to be stopped prematurely. Russell followed with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win against Wilson on court one.
Youssef ElShafei added another point for the Moccasins by defeating Ty'lon Miller 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Marco Cinotti completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Tapera at No. 3 singles.
The matches on courts four and six were left unfinished, with
Mario Antonio Morales leading Wright 6-3, 5-4 at No. 4 singles, and
Leon Bircanin narrowly ahead of Wetty 4-3 at No. 6 singles. Florida Southern's performance secured the overall victory in Lakeland.
