LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 11 Florida Southern College (16-5) secured a decisive 6-1 victory over Eckerd College (10-7) on Monday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. Today's win marks the most regular-season wins in a single season since the 2007 season, when the Mocs went 17-5.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point with a sweep across all courts. The No. 3 doubles team of
Mario Garoz and
Edoardo Melindo, ranked No. 30, quickly defeated Mario Kirkov and Valdemar Spillemose from Eckerd, 6-2, marking the first completed match. Following them,
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert clinched the doubles point at No. 2 with a commanding 6-2 victory over Adrian Gheorghe and Marshall Hulett. At No. 1 doubles,
George Russell and
Onur Turgut, ranked No. 17, closed out the doubles sweep by besting the No. 32 pair of Batu Ataseven and Amirali Ghavam, 7-5.
In singles play, the Moccasins extended their lead with No. 6 Garoz defeating Batu Ataseven at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Matthew Hewitt then increased the margin to 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Mario Kirkov at No. 2 singles.
Youssef ElShafei clinched the dual match at No. 5 singles by overcoming Valdemar Spillemose, 6-2, 6-3, ensuring Florida Southern's win.
Following the clinch,
Marco Cinotti added another point for the Mocs with a 7-6(5), 6-1 win against Marshall Hulett at No. 4 singles. Eckerd captured its only point when Amirali Ghavam defeated Turgut, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. The final score was 5-1 in favor of Florida Southern, as
Mario Antonio Morales, ranked No. 51, rounded out the contest with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Oskar Ekjord at No. 6 singles.
