LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 13 Florida Southern College men's tennis (17-5) defeated No. 16 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (13-5) 5-2 on Thursday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. FSC secured the victory by winning four of the six singles matches and clinching the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point against the Eagles with decisive victories at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles.
Mario Garoz and
Edoardo Melindo, ranked No. 25, delivered a strong 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, followed by
George Russell and
Onur Turgut's 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over the No. 28 pair of Marc Mail and Frederic Tu. ERAU managed a win at No. 2 doubles as Joao Morgado and Joshua Nuyts edged
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert, 7-6(3).
In singles play, FSC extended its lead, starting with Boskovic's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Mason Cisco. Garoz, ranked No. 9, continued the momentum with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against No. 18 Mail at No. 1 singles.
Mario Antonio Morales, ranked No. 57, added another point at No. 5 singles, defeating Tu 6-0, 6-4, which clinched the match for the Moccasins.
Marco Cinotti contributed to the final score with a three-set win at No. 4 singles, overcoming Morgado 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. Despite FSC's clinch, the Eagles picked up two singles wins as Manuel Lanteri defeated
Matthew Hewitt 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and Nuyts bested Turgut 7-6(6), 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The final dual score was 5-2 in favor of Florida Southern.
The Mocs will await the start of the Sunshine State Conference Championships, taking place April 30-May 2 at the Perper Tennis Complex in Boca Raton, hosted by Lynn University.
