ORLANDO, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week have been announced, with Florida Southern College's
Jacob Czyz named Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week,
Onur Turgut named Men's Tennis Player of the Week, and
Aidan Kelley named Baseball Pitcher of the Week. This is the 11th weekly award for Czyz in his career, and the first of Turgut's and Kelley's careers.
Senior
Jacob Czyz dominated faceoffs, winning 20 of 24, and added a goal for FSC as the Mocs picked up their second-straight home conference victory with a 12-9 win over Lynn. He collected a team-high 12 groundballs as well. He currently leads all NCAA Division II in groundballs per game and ranks second in face off winning percentage.
Turgut had a big impact in the 6-1 win over Lincoln Memorial on Thursday afternoon. Turgut paired with
George Russell at the #1 court in doubles for a 6-3 victory over their LMU pairing. Their win clinched the doubles point for the Mocs heading into singles. Turgut then won 6-1, 6-4 at the #3 court over his opponent, clinching the team score.
Kelley anchored the Florida Southern defense with a stellar ending to the Friday night upset over No. 1 Tampa. Kelley entered with a 2-1 FSC lead and bases loaded for the Spartans in the bottom of the eighth. The senior righty secured back-to-back outs to complete the eighth inning with no hits and no runs, leaving all three UTampa players on base. In the bottom of the ninth with a 3-1 lead, Kelley struck out the side to secure his second save of the season and hand Tampa its first conference loss of the season. Earlier in the week, Kelley was called in the bottom of the ninth against Valdosta State, sealing an 11-7 win for the Mocs after striking out two and allowing no runs on just two hits.
